Melissa Guadarrama Reflection
Melissa Guadarrama was 16 years old when she found out that she was pregnant, at her local police station, in Elmwood Park. She had not been home for days, which caused her family to worry about her whereabouts, which resulted in them calling the police. She was brought to the station and didn’t know any excuse other than to tell the officers that she ran away because she was pregnant. This was just a lie that she told to get pity from the officers, little did Melissa know that during this time she was two months pregnant, she blew up in laughter when she found out because she thought it was a joke.
Before Melissa found out that she was pregnant, she wouldn’t show up for school, she was constantly around bad influences. When talking about

Melissa decided to distance herself from the people that negatively affected her life so that Matthew can grow up in a happy and safe environment. The father was no longer present, but his absence was a reflection on the sacrifices that Melissa would endure in order to protect her child. Her family needed to get along and communicate more so that whenever Melissa needed the extra help they were available. During the pregnancy, Melissa finished school online and graduated a year earlier than her classmates. She also got her first job working at her local Walgreens, which helped her be more responsible with her money. Her mindset was different during and after her pregnancy because she learned to put her son before …show more content…
It was snowing that morning but the job of being a mom never ends. As I walk to the front door of her home, she comes to the door and lets me in, greeting me as usual. She takes my coat as I follow her to the kitchen, where she is trying to feed Matthew a bowl of rice as he runs around the kitchen with his toys. She starts to call out “Matthew!” every time that he leaves the kitchen, I can tell that she is juggling too many things at a time because while she is still trying to feed him, she is also serving herself some rice and tortillas so that she can eat. Matthew is currently two years old, but he calls Melissa by her first name, “Mesa” he says as he asks for something to drink. When I asked why he doesn’t call her mom, she said “he calls me mama whenever he wants me to hold him, its normal to me now,” Melissa says as she is sitting herself down in the dining room where the rest of her family is at, her mom was the one end across from her, which was next to her father. Her older sister and younger brother both took Matthew’s high chair and sat him with all of us. Melissa is now eating without having to worry about her son going around the house with no supervision as to what he is doing. The family start talking about their plans for the day, Melissa tells the family that Matthew’s aunt wants to take him out to the museum, the rest of her family starts to tell her no because of the flu that has

In this scene Melissa-Anne seemed to be quite controlling and also devious. She was quickly able to take hold of what ever was happening and turn it around to suit her and what she wanted. She also seemed to have power over Rodney and could convince him to do nearly anything, without it seeming as though she pressuring him. Rodney seemed to be quite childish and pretends that he is rebellious. He makes out that he gets drunk to try and impress Melissa-Anne and then turns it into a joke when he realizes that he isn’t fooling her. He also acts like an idiot when he doesn’t understand something or just can’t handle being serious. She tried to play the “cool sister” by helping Melissa-Anne and Rodney sneak out but also tried to be serious by telling them a story about herself. This revealed that she was irresponsible and…

32 “Well its actually happening ma’, I’m goin’ back to school.”Rufus said. “I want you to know, I truly am proud of you Rufus.” His mother replied. Curtis and Janet went to a different school then Rufus but he still walked them to school then walked himself to school. On his way to school a car followed him very slowly but Rufus kept walking. When he got to school it looked the same on the outside that it always had. Rufus pushed open the doors at Searingtown School and yelled “I’m back!” All of his friends ran over to hug him. He went down to the office to get a tour he thought he didn’t need because he remembered every single solitary thing about this place. While the tour was going on everything going on was a blur. He looked left, right and left again, admiring the changes the school had made. “Wow” he sighed. “Is there a problem Rufus?” the tour guide asked. Rufus answered, “When I was here the wall paint was all chipped, there were broken windows and holes in the walls.” “Oh ok, well that concludes our tour and this door on your right is your first period class.” The tour guide replied. Rufus walked in and sat at an available seat at the back of the class room. He opened his notebook and took notes even though he didn’t understand anything that was going on. By the time 5th period came around it was time for lunch he was starving. All of his friends called him over and asked him to sit with him. Momma didn’t make him a big lunch because they didn’t have that much food in the house and then needed to split it 3 different ways. Allison who used to have a big crush on Rufus sat right next to him. Mitchell and Charlie sat across from him and Christina, Alisha and Sammy sat around them. When the bell rang he went to his locker and when he got to class he looked out the window and saw the same car that followed him to school. The only person he thought of was Simon. But he didn’t have a car? Rufus ran to the office to explain the…

Motherhood is supposedly an innate gift women possess, but when they are unable to bring a child into the world, they feel as if they are a failure. Most women are often scared to reveal their suffering because they do not want pity; like Jiménez, they do not want to be the woman “everyone feels sorry for” (34). Readers are thus able to empathize with and possibly relate to Jiménez’s struggle. Despite the sorrowful undertones Jiménez’s memoir beholds, hope is instilled with its happy ending. After wanting a child for nearly twenty years, on July 29th, 2009, Jiménez gave birth to a baby girl weighing nine pounds, seven ounces (164). Lesbians are supposedly unacceptable mothers, but Karleen Pendleton Jiménez is giving a new name to butch…

Low self-esteem in Melissa's story I would say is because growing up she never had a father figure around because her dad left but also the men her mother dated weren't all the great. They also believe that Melissa was abused by the men that were with her mom which could cause many problems besides low self-esteem. We see Melissa low self-esteem right in the episode though when she tell her mom that she just gets high to get away and that she can't do it anymore. Melissa has many internal conflicts we see this with in the clip of the intervention when she isnt open to rehab until the interventionist reads the letter from her son colby. THis is because she has so much guilt inside her for losing her…

    (1) A few years ago, I watched a terrifying story on ABC's 20/20. It was a story about a teenage girl who had gotten pregnant. She successfully managed to keep her pregnancy from everyone, even her immediate family. She secretly gave birth to a baby girl -- by herself -- at the basement of her house. Out of fear, she covered the baby with a blanket and the baby died. There was an investigation and trial on the teenage girl, whether she should be convicted of murder or not.…

Mrs. Johnson is a long time friend so I notice the excitement in here eyes to talk to me about her new addition. She said that nobody has ever wanted to write about her feeling of her pregnancy and with two other children excited to have an adult to talk too. We sat down on her couch and she turned toward me eager to know what I was going to ask.…
