The movie the Doctor is a good example of how communication in the health field should work. The main Character is Jack McKee, who is a heart surgeon. The movie begins by showing how Jack acts towards his patients. Jack always joked around with his patients, he always liked to down play the situation and never went out of his way to make his patients feel better or help them understand what was happening to their body. Jack like to joke about the patients condition which would leave the patient feeling more concerned and upset then they already were. His live at home was also struggling. Jack is not use to being a patient, so he feels that because he is a Doctor at the hospital he is higher up then everyone including the patients. Jack had no choice but to just deal with his situation, he then begins radiation therapy for his tumor.
In the waiting room Jack meets a lady named June. She has a tumor in her brain and was there for radiation therapy. Jack starts to develop a very close relationship with June after hearing her story. Throughout the movie June made Jack understand that communication is important between the doctor and the patient and also understanding that patients are human beings and they deserve the respect just like everyone else. After, Jack finds out that the radiation did not work for him and he now has to get surgery to remove the tumor, he became very scared.
Jack was not use to being the person getting the surgery, he was always the one who performed the surgery’s. After the surgery he was unable to speak for a while and eventually he got his voice back. After returning back to work, Jack felt like a new person. His experience as being a patient changed his perspective on how to communicate with his patients
