Measuring Energy and Food
Experiment 4.5 Measuring the energy content of a “Dorito” and Popcorn.

Using the method as described on page 46 of the textbook, measure the energy content of a Dorito and a “Popped” corn kernel.

Aim: 1. Compare your results of each food and determine which will give the greatest energy per gram.
2. How much of each food would you need to boil 250mL of water?

Hypothesis: (Before you begin, what do you think will be the conclusion.)
As the Dorito is heated, it will release much more heat than the popcorn. This will be the result as the Dorito has more mass than Popcorn as well as more carbohydrates. It would take about 4-5 Dorito’s or 15 Popcorn to boil 250mL of water.

Variables:
Table 1: Independent Variable | Dependent Variable | Controlled Variables | The material was changed from a Dorito chip to a singular piece of popcorn. | The heat of the boiling-tube will be measured after the material has burnt out. | The amount of water will be the same for each material. The starting temperature of the water will be the same for each material. The materials will be the same distance away from the boiling-tube. |

Results: (4.2 is the value of the specific heat capacity of water, in joules per gram per degree Celsius – the number of joules taken to raise the temperature of water by 1 °C. 1 cm3 of water has a mass of 1 g. If the number is more than 1000 J/g, express it as kilojoules kJ)

Table 2. Measured Energy from Dorito Weight of Dorito (g) | Temp. Of Water at start (*C) | Temp. Of Water at end (*C) | Temp Rise of Water (*C) | Energy Released (KJ) | Energy Content (J/g) | 1.9 | 21 | 90.1 | 69.1 | 5.8044 | 3.055 |

Table 3. Measured Energy from Popcorn Weight of Popped Corn (g) | Temp. Of Water at start (*C) | Temp. Of Water at end (*C) | Temp Rise of Water | Energy Released (KJ) | Energy Content (J/g) | 0.29 | 21 | 35 | 14 | 1.1176 | 3.853 |

This scientific experiment is to gauge the amount of kernels popped when the storage temperatures of the kernels are changed. Does freezing popcorn kernels for 24 hours yield more or less popped kernels than popcorn kernels stored at room temperature? By performing this experiment we can decide how to maximize our food potential. We will purchase six identical brands of popcorn from the local food store that have the same ingredients, weight and brand name. We will take three of the bags of popcorn kernels and store it in a standard household freezer for twenty four hours. The temperature of the freezer will remain at a constant rate of temperature. The other identical bags of popcorn kernels will be stored on a cabinet shelf and remain at a constant room temperature.…

Food is the primary source of energy for all living organisms - it is used to replenish and supply energy to the body and provide the nutrients it needs to grow and thrive. In 1824, Nicolas Clement came up with the term “calorie” as a unit of heat energy (Calorie n.d.). In modern day, calories are often associated with food because the number of calories in food is the measure of how much potential energy that food contains (Painter 2006). The Law of Conservation of Energy states that the total amount of energy in an isolated system remains constant; no energy can be gained or lost, however, it can be transferred from one form to another (Tuckerman n.d.).…
