Traditionally, maternal and child care refers to the care of women during pregnancy, birth, postpartum as well as the care of infants, children and adolescents. Public health nurses offer special services such as child birth preparation classes, sibling’s classes and parenting classes. The objective of the program includes saving lives of women and children from illness and death associated with childbirth and immediate prenatal period. Issues of maternal and child nutrition and use of other reproductive health services like family planning. Community based intervention is encouraged to mobilize communities and enable community members to identify and address barriers that prevent or delay women and infants from receiving maternal and neonatal health service during emergency, obstetric and neonatal care.
8.1 Personal Context:
As a nurse, I feel so happy for the re-introduction of community nursing and community midwifery programs by the nursing and midwifery council of Nigeria as an intervention strategy of council towards the reduction of infant and maternal morbidity and mortality. It is a good thing that the health of mothers and children are a great priority to the government as corrective measures for the neglect they have suffered in the past when maternal deaths and child hood mortality rates were very high.

Health talks on how to promote health in pregnancy and after delivery is given to clients every clinic day is done. Immunization of mothers during the antenatal clinic is ensured and that of babies begin at birth at once with BCG. We do not hesitate to refer them to specialists whenever we discover any abnormalities.
8.4 Current Research:
Having looked at these statistics and the problems related to maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity vis-a-vis the need for evidence based care, the nurse and midwife and his/her organization must ensure or put it at the back of his or her mind that services provided clients and patients are effective, efficient and based on scientifically proven best evidence available. (Tiedemann, 2008)
