Marriage is a Private Affair by Chinua Achebe
In this short story, “Marriage is a private affair” by Chinua Achebe. The main characters are
Nnaemeka
and his father Okeke.
Nnaemeka
is getting marry with his love, Nene. But his father doesn’t agree it because his father thinks marriage should chosen by parents. his is a complicated decision for Nnaemeka because he must choose between the man who raised him or the woman he loves. The tension between old and new ways of living sometimes creates conflict within families, especially between generations. It was also difficult because if he chooses his wife, then his father may never speak to him again, but if he chooses his father, then he may never experience true love ever again. I think the protagonist is Nnaemeka because he said “I have come to ask for forgiveness.” He felt apologize for his father cause he can’t just marry with a girl who he doesn’t like but his father likes and he already have a fiance. He came home to ask for forgiveness, in this point i think he is good son cause he didn’t run away and did response to his father. “I am engaged to marry another girl who has all of Ugoye ’s good qualities, and who…” He is trying to explain to his father and let him believe Nene is a good girl and he doesn’t marry a wrong wrong person. Nnaemeka nevers say any depreciate word even the girl he doesn’t like. He believes he should listen to his heart, only marry with the girl he likes.
I think Okeke, who is Nnaemeka’s father is the antagonist because he stop his son marry with his love. When his son trying to introduce Nene to him, he just he doesn’t want to hear anything about this girl. “...nothing is different. What one looks for in a wife are good character and a Christian background.” Okeke said it to his son, he believe a good wife should be that. But he nevers give Nene a chance, even she is a good girl and she is Christian. “...if my son wants to kill himself, let him do it with his own hand. It’s not for me to help me.”He

She tries to keep the same bond throughout the story. She is selfish because she wants her sister all to herself. She is not happy when Sourdi goes out with Duke because she is scared that someone will take Sourdi away from her. That is one of the reasons she does not like Mr. Chhay because he married Sourdi and they moved away so Nea barely saw her sister. Nea is very controlling. She expected things to go the way they were when Sourdi and she were little. Her life is so complicated; at her young age she has seen a lot that has just confused her. She never understood why her sister married such an old guy. Sourdi was unhappy with her arranged marriage but she never tried to do anything about. Nea was more concerned about it and she voices her opinion to her mother, who does not listen to what she is saying. No one ever took the time to explain to her what was going on so she made her own…

    Saving Sourdi Analysis

In most cultures that practiced arranged marriages, families would marry off their daughters to men of wealthy families. It was clear that Sourdi was in love with Duke, however, it was never her choice who’d she marry. This is where Mr. Chhay’s character comes into play. Nea’s mother and uncle arranged for Sourdi to marry Mr. Chhay. “Ma liked Sourdi’s husband. He had a steady job, a house. She didn’t mind he was so old and Sourdi just eighteen when they married. In her eyes, eighteen was a good age to start a family” (Chai, 2001). This statement made by their mother, pretty much explains her feelings towards Sourdi’s marriage and what she values most in life, which would be wealth. I think that their mother feels this way because of how she was raised and the cultural traditions she practiced as a child. The mother had also married at a young age so she felt that it was only right that Sourdi marry Mr. Chhay. Based on the description that Nea provided, I would assume that Duke is somewhat of a rebel because of the way he dresses and the music he listens to. However, I do believe that Duke is kindhearted because of how much he truly cares about…
