The Starbucks siren is about to butt heads with the Red Bull.
Eager to dip its influential -- if not omnipresent -- cup into the $8 billion energy drink category, the world's largest coffee chain announced at its annual meeting in Seattle that it plans to roll out in April a new line of "natural" energy drinks, Starbucks Refreshers, to be sold at groceries, convenience stores and Starbucks stores.
The fruity, carbonated drink that's high in antioxidants uses unroasted, green coffee extract for the energy boost -- but has no coffee taste. The beverage, with flavors ranging from Raspberry Pomegranate to Strawberry Lemonade, will sell for $1.99 for a 12-ounce, 60-calorie can.
"Starbucks is firing on all cylinders," CEO Howard Schultz told 2,000 shareholders. "We are now creating lots of Starbucks products to live outside of our stores."
The move comes at a time the company is barreling into the multibillion-dollar consumer product goods segment. Starbucks executives say sales from this emerging side of the business will someday match sales from its retail stores. Starbucks just opened its first Evolution Fresh juicery in Bellevue, Wash., with plans to roll it out at grocers nationally over the next year.
The Starbucks new product machine is in overdrive. Energy drinks are the fastest-growing niche in the beverage business, up 16% over the past year, says John Sicher, publisher of Beverage Digest. "This is a very innovative product," Sicher says. "There is huge consumer interest in energy drinks."
Never mind that some nutritionists have knocked energy drinks such as Red Bull, Monster and Rockstar for their caffeine and calories.
Each Refreshers has 40 to 55 milligrams of caffeine -- two-thirds the caffeine of a shot of espresso and one-third that of an 8-ounce coffee.
Red Bull rolls out Red Bull Total Zero, with no carbs, sugar or calories in April, says spokesman Paul Yoffe, who won't comment on Starbucks.

The can is made out of aluminum and is very easy to carry around wherever you are going. It’s tab at the top of the can matches the color of the Monster that it goes with. Some people would say that Red Bull is better because it “improves performance and increases concentration (redbullusa)”, but I find that when I drink a Monster that it does the same exact thing without the crash and burn effects like Red Bull. Monsters also give you more to drink and enjoy unlike Red Bulls which only gives you 8 ounces to enjoy, which, let’s face it, isn’t very much to drink if you are very thirsty. I, for one, have tried both the Red Bull and the Monster energy drinks, and I, being a college student, like the Monster energy drink not only for its cheap price at convenience stores but for its amazing taste. The taste of a Monster energy drink is hard to describe, but I think it kind of tastes like some sugar powder out of a Pixie Stix. The Monster energy also gives you more to drink and will give the same amount of energy as any other energy drink. With many types of energy drinks out in the market today, it’s easy to see how many people could like a different type of energy drink than a can of Monster. Therefore, I insist that if you haven’t tried a can of a Monster energy drink that you buy one and try for yourself.     As I started collecting information for this paper, I soon realized that the energy drink industry is a very small (18 percent) part of the beverage industry, but a very dominant part to say the least. Interestingly, the major players in the industry, Monster Energy, Red Bull, and Rockstar, have intentionally veered away from the conventional mediums used to promote products. They instead have chosen marketing mediums that appeal more to their target markets and the “live life on the edge” lifestyles that they live. Monster for example, shies away from mass market advertising; instead they focus all of their sales efforts and marketing muscle on sponsoring action sports athletes, artists and musical, events and tours. All of this ties in with the company’s overall philosophy that Monster isn’t just a beverage, but a lifestyle brand (Landi). “The key is for us (Monster) to retain what we do best, which is marketing in an unconventional way and keep that feel for the brand,” said Rodney Sacks, CEO of Hansen Natural Corp. “Monster is all about action sports, punk rock music, partying, girls, and living life on the edge” (Landi). The companies that produce energy drinks are using the current popularity of action sports such as motocross, skateboarding, BMX, etc., to showcase their products and to further brand awareness. It’s not coincidental that the demographic that participates in these sports and idolizes its professional athletes are also the same demographic that consumes energy drinks. You’ll see very few TV commercials or print ads promoting energy drinks but when you turn on the ESPN produced X-Games, just about every athlete participating is sponsored by Red Bull, Monster, or Rockstar.     At this time there is no long-term research to report on in regards to energy drinks. What we do know is that these drinks have a variety of ingredients such as ginseng, amino acids, ginkgo, various vitamins, and high amounts of sugar. However, the primary active energy ingredient is caffeine. At this time, the FDA does not regulate the amounts of caffeine that are in these drinks. They suggest that within a 12-ounce beverage serving the amount of caffeine should be 68 milligrams or less. A report published by the Journal of Analytical Toxicology showed that of ten of the most popular energy drinks had as high as 141 milligrams in one 16-ounce serving. The following 12-ounce energy drinks showed, Monster at 120 milligrams, Red Bull at 116 milligrams, and Amp contained 107 milligrams of caffeine. To give a comparison, look at Coke and Pepsi. They only contain between 34 to 38 milligrams of caffeine.…
