Company Overview and History
MAC is a cosmetic company that was founded in Toronto, Canada by make- up artist Frank Toskan, and his business partner Frank Angelo. The Estee Lauder Company Inc. owns MAC. MAC stands for Make-up Art Cosmetics, and was originally sold to make-up artists. But now, the cosmetics are also sold to anyone who wants to buy it. * In 1984 the first MAC store opened in Toronto at the Simpsons department store which is now known as The Bay. * In 1988 MAC opens its first U.S location on 5th avenue at Henri Bendel in New York. Also it launches its soon to be famous matte lipsticks. * In 1991 MAC opens on Christopher Street, N.Y. the infamous Lady Bunny becomes its fabulous hostess/receptionist. * In 1993 MAC is one of the first makeup companies to help a cause by launching VIVA GLAM Lipstick in North America, every cent of its selling price is donated to helping people living with HIV/AIDS. * In 1994 MAC AIDS Fund gets incorporated as a charity and powers up its campaign to raise funds for people living with HIV/AIDS. * In 1995 MAC opens in Hollywood, Santa Monica, Paris, Montreal, London, Tokyo and Melbourne. * In 1997 Frank Angel passes. International recording artist/actor K.D. Lang signs on with MAC as spokesperson for VIVA GLAM II. * In 1998 the MAC Pro concept store launches in New York as a one-stop resources for makeup professionals. * In 1999 MAC reaches over 300 locations worldwide. Also the MAC Aids Fund reaches $14 million dollars. * In 2000 MAC President John Demsey of N.Y. presents a check on behalf of the MAC AIDS Fund in the amount of $500,000 to the United Nations Development Program to help support UN-sponsored HIV/AIDS relief in Africa. Also John Demsey presents a donation of $500,000 on behalf of the MAC AIDS Fund, in the name of the late Frank Angelo, co-founder of MAC, to La Maison
