MAC Self Reflection
MAC Self Reflection Embarking on a journey of tenacity and leadership has been the cornerstone of my personal growth and development. My experiences have sculpted values of intense dedication and resilience. I’ve had countless achievements in music, from playing guitar on stage at local festivals to much larger events such as Edmonton Rock Fest and opening for Tom Cochrane and Chilliwack. Now, as I stand at a new chapter in my academic journey, I am drawn to Archbishop MacDonald High School due to the academic excellence, outstanding athletics, and values presented by the school.

My faith in God has been an important guiding light even as far back as my early life in the Philippines. It has instilled in me a deep sense of compassion, humility, and service to others. Furthermore, Archbishop MacDonald High School aligns with the Filipino values of kindness and hospitality. I believe that MAC’s value-based education will not only support my academic growth, but also nurture my spiritual development, empowering me to lead a life rooted in faith and service.

Particularly for basketball. As an avid player deeply invested in the discipline and brotherhood of the game, challenges regarding injury have presented themselves as difficult barriers. Yet, these obstacles would catalyze my personal growth; moreover, it would amplify my ability to bounce back. Despite these setbacks, I refused to allow myself to fall behind. Rigorous workouts, rehabilitation, and commitment to my team aided me in overcoming these challenges, emerging stronger and more determined than ever before. My life has revolved around basketball and I hope MAC athletics will assist me in achieving my goal of becoming a professional

Lystedt was a student-athlete that was tackled then told by his coach to “shake it off.” Lystedt’s journey as a concussion survivor began with one blow, and led him to being airlifted to a hospital. This story was covered by major news networks and eventually led to a law, which protects athletes like Lystedt from returning to play in games after major injuries.…

The high school has given me all types of opportunities from discipline to study options and also preparing me for college and the real world. I’s truly grateful for all the supports given to get this far because high school helped changed and mold me to become the young lady that I is today. It helped further my education and I continue to pray to the lord above that I can stay on track because only God knows where I’m headed with this education; but for sure it’s for a better me. Hopefully my years at Concordia will be the years of…

A few hours later when I went to the hospital, I discovered that I had torn my Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Initially, I did not know what to expect from the situation, but I came to realize how much it would affect my life. The ACL functions as a ligament that connects the tibia and the femur. It provides stability in the knee, and with this injury, I could not participate in competitive soccer for 10 months. To undergo this painful experience at such a young age is extremely difficult; however, I chose to embrace the situation rather than let it destroy me. I could no longer play the sport I loved, but I could not change anything about that; I could only control my attitude in this predicament. I went above and beyond at every physical therapy appointment, no matter how strenuous/painful the workouts were. Times frequently came…

A cold sweat began to bead at the base of my neck as I urged the muscles in my knee to work their way through the set of squats my physical therapist had asked me to perform. My appointment was scheduled at seven in the morning, but already I could feel the adrenaline rushing up and down my spine as I watched the sun rise over the waking city through the large paneled windows of the gym. Sharp pain shot up the inside of my right knee as I slowly lowered myself, making it difficult to continue the squats. As I pushed the muscles in my knee to lower myself further, I gazed intently at the wall in front of me for inspiration. A quote I had learned to cherish over time as my personal mantra adorned the wall, reading, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." With these powerful words lodged into the back of my mind, I dropped my body into an even lower squat and continued to complete the set with strong determination to get back to soccer, the sport…

My senior year of high school I received a traumatic brain injury in October while playing field hockey. What I assumed to be a minor injury with a quick recovery, turned into a yearlong battle to return to normalcy that has left me with lingering effects. The injury not only caused headaches and illness, but it prevented me from using electronics, spending time with friends, going to school, reading, and participating in sports. Amidst all these setbacks I turned to one of my favorite quotes by Lailah Gifty Akita to help me through: “Keep strong and stay determined. You are capable of overcoming the challenge.” I responded to my injury the best I could: with positivity, appreciation, and determination. I used my abundant free time to discover…

Only about 34 percent of the nation’s high schools have professional athletic trainer working for them, the other 66 percent rely on part-time physicians, emergency medical technicians, or coaches to deal with medical emergencies at games and practice. Being able to be evaluated and treated moments after an injury occurs even it is something small such as muscle soreness or a major incident such as a torn ligament, being able to correctly examine the situation could possibly refrain the injury from worsening. In addition, numbers show that a number with school districts with established athletic trainer programs report lower rates of injuries among student athletes. The difference an individual can make is eye opening. The difference I can make with the kinesiology…

Athletics is ingrained in the human experience and is an integral part of American culture. Because of that, many of my weekends and after school hours have been dedicated to either watching a game or starting one with the kids in the neighborhood. Athletics runs deep in my family. My great uncle was a professional baseball player and my family, including my father, three brothers and a sister, are all very involved with the various team sports. It’s this immersion into various sporting activities that has led me to the understanding that engaging in athletics has a very positive impact in our lives. Additionally, sports are extremely important in building one’s character through hard work, learning to work with others on a team and by learning how to cope with the joy of winning and the inevitability of losing.…

As a young boy of about nine or ten, it was a dream of mine to play on my school’s Varsity Soccer team. I spent many nights watching the current players contest with other schools for the title of WPIAL Champions. Being a young club soccer player, this was my ultimate goal. Now even though I had a strong passion for the game, my many years of club soccer were not easy. I was not a sub-par player, but I was also not the prodigy that some of my teammates were. I had to work much harder than most players to secure my starting spot on my team, but my efforts definitely payed off. For the first five or six years of club soccer, I held a spot as one of my team’s two starting center defenders. All of a sudden, while at a rainy tournament game in West Virginia, I went into a tackle wrong and injured my back. My entire soccer career went downhill from…

With this mindset, I focused my attention on making the basketball team my junior year. Every day, after marching band rehearsal, I would practice dribbling in my garage, rap or rock blaring through the speakers that had I set up. The weights that used to gather dust, rusting away in the corner, gained a new purpose as I performed a wide arrangement of exercises, ranging from curls to squats. The heated air, accompanied by the occasional breeze, and the concrete pavement was my…

I became a dedicated student leader committed to social justice and being a voice for those who were experiencing what my family had experienced. The social, cultural, and economic barriers that I have faced in my time in the U.S. have prompted me to become a global citizen who is committed to International service and adamant about the importance of diversity in any community I am in. I plan to contribute to the campus community in a unique and positive manner that enhances campus diversity by becoming involved outside the classroom. I owe it to the aspects of my identity to join the International Club, Black Life, and getting involved with the Student Promoted Access Center for Education and Services.
