Personal Narrative: A Career In My Knee Surgery
A cold sweat began to bead at the base of my neck as I urged the muscles in my knee to work their way through the set of squats my physical therapist had asked me to perform. My appointment was scheduled at seven in the morning, but already I could feel the adrenaline rushing up and down my spine as I watched the sun rise over the waking city through the large paneled windows of the gym. Sharp pain shot up the inside of my right knee as I slowly lowered myself, making it difficult to continue the squats. As I pushed the muscles in my knee to lower myself further, I gazed intently at the wall in front of me for inspiration. A quote I had learned to cherish over time as my personal mantra adorned the wall, reading, "What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us." With these powerful words lodged into the back of my mind, I dropped my body into an even lower squat and continued to complete the set with strong determination to get back to soccer, the sport …show more content…
I am only a mere seventeen years old and although there are numerous past challenges which continue to surface as obstacles to this day, such as my knee surgery, there is a whole world of adulthood which I am entirely oblivious to that will undoubtedly provide me with issues as well. Being a teenager is difficult; I have the responsibilities of applying for colleges, finishing my schoolwork, slowly prying myself from beneath my parents' wing, and challenging medical obstacles. Because physical therapy (the community and the quote) has inspired me in immeasurable ways, I have learned to focus on my potential and my capabilities rather than my weaknesses in not only soccer, but also my schoolwork, music, and all other aspects of my

A few hours later when I went to the hospital, I discovered that I had torn my Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). Initially, I did not know what to expect from the situation, but I came to realize how much it would affect my life. The ACL functions as a ligament that connects the tibia and the femur. It provides stability in the knee, and with this injury, I could not participate in competitive soccer for 10 months. To undergo this painful experience at such a young age is extremely difficult; however, I chose to embrace the situation rather than let it destroy me. I could no longer play the sport I loved, but I could not change anything about that; I could only control my attitude in this predicament. I went above and beyond at every physical therapy appointment, no matter how strenuous/painful the workouts were. Times frequently came…

I considered the gravitas of my actions only once before deciding to bandage a part of my body. I had wondered if girl I sit next to in Sociology lecture would believe the stories behind my injury. I had wondered if my friends would notice the injury and try to aid me as I walked around the bustling city. I had wondered if they would be annoyed and the constant reference to my injuries. I began to question myself as I wrapped the bright blue bandage around my knee. Around once, then twice, and fastened it securely on the back of my leg. I had spent an hour trying to figure out which body part I should bandage. The wrists were too obvious, my back to hidden, my left ankle too obscured by my new Adidas superstars. So I settled on my knee. My knee could play a central character in thousands of stories that could have caused injury. I began to picture a tumultuous decent down the cement stairs of 55 E 10th street, a catastrophic encounter with a street sign marking the fire line as a no-park zone, an awry Uber making direct contact with my kneecap in the middle of a rainy overcast afternoon. I push those thought away instead focusing on the Yoko Ono’s words. I must only make up the story when someone…

“A dream without work is just a dream,” he told us,” if you don’t put the work in, you can’t reach your goals. Simple.” These are the words of Jim O’Connor, a youth and JV lacrosse coach in the Jamestown-High Point area. When I am faced with an obstacle that begs me to give up, his quote echoes in my head. After years of his coaching, my admiration for O’Connor is deeper than simply pushing past exhaustion or forcing myself to do homework; his influence has made me a better a person. Moreover, I believe that his impact on me is only so deep because I chose to admire him.…

For example, feeding their families, bringing home money to pay expenses, etc. “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth comes knowledge and understanding.” (Proverbs 2:6) Individuals must take steps to reach their potential and family success. To be a physical therapist, people must complete several courses in college and earn degrees. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, “The length of professional DPT programs is typically 3 years. People ask me why I care so much. They tell me it’s just a game, get over it. But soccer has never been just a game to me. Soccer has been consuming my time, thoughts, and body since my parents signed me up for small-time recreational soccer twelve years ago that developed into extremely competitive travel soccer. They, perhaps unknowingly, threw me headlong into a life of traveling countless miles, long nights of practice, and an unforgettable amount of tears, sweat, and bloodshed. All which persisted over the course of my extensive soccer career.…

There are two instances in my life that has inspired me to gain interest in medicine. My grandmother when I was around the age of twelve received double bypass surgery and I fell in love with the physician who took care of her. The physician was a middle aged woman who was one of the kindest person I have ever met, and she gave us the news of how everything went fine during surgery. She also gave us great confidence in how my grandmother would return to normal soon. The look on my parents and aunts face when she gave the news gave me goosebumps and to this day I feel the same goosebumps when I think about this. I just wanted to one day be in a position to deliver good news to a family and to see that “look” of relief on their faces. Another…

In June of 2016, during and intense basketball practice, I injured my knee. Our team participated in a rebounding drill, and I pushed myself to do my absolute best to get every rebound. On one of my turns, I jumped up for the ball, and when I landed terrible pain shot through my knee. I somehow hobbled over to the sideline, but finishing practice obviously seemed out of the question. The next day, my knee became very swollen and every time I tried walking, pain would shoot through my knee. My mom made me an appointment to go see Dr. David Lemak in Birmingham. At the appointment, Dr. Lemak checked my knee, and informed me that it should heal with some rest. He gave us his cell phone number just in case I injured my knee again. A few weeks later,…

I walked into the internship and across the room, I noticed a new therapist working with patients. I assumed she was a physical therapist because she interacted with patients well and was knowledgeable on the instructions she gave the patients. She introduced herself to me as a student completing her clinical education. She impressed me with her attitude and how she conducted herself; to me, she represented a professional student. Because she shared qualities I had and she was a successful student, I knew if I implemented her qualities in physical therapy school I too could be a professional. She pushed through challenges to achieve her goals, was excited to learn new information, and enjoyed helping patients through the rehabilitation process…

While working at the University of Miami Hospital, I had the rare opportunity to shadow with Dr. Garcia-Soto who was a gynecology fellow at the time. She allowed me to sit in with her on two separate surgeries, one being a complete hysterectomy and the other being a vaginal tumor removal with the implantation of a vaginal stent. This experience has most significantly influenced my decision to study medicine because it has enlightened me about the practicalities of being a physician. For both surgeries I was able to follow Dr. Garcia-Soto through her rounds with the patients, listen as she described the procedures and set expectations, observe the surgical team prep the patient and operating room, and watch as she performed both procedures.…

Standing up straight, ready to write, I asked him one of my very first questions that I had written on a piece of paper. What inspired you to become a physical therapist? Then Mr. Garza talked, he said, “when I tore my meniscus and posterior cruciate ligament during my senior year in football I was crushed, it was one of the few things that I truly loved and it was gone for good in a split second, faster than you can say my last name. At the time of my injury I didn’t understand what I was going through, but as I became educated in the field I now know that I was going through depression and different stages of coping with a sports injury. After being diagnosed with a multiple tears in my knee I had to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair the ligaments, which would put me out of sports and activity for 6 weeks minimum. After surgery I was prescribed multiple therapeutic options, which included an automatic icing machine and physical therapy at the sports medicine clinic. Attending therapy sessions at the sports medicine clinic comforted me and while I was there I became intrigued by the work of the therapist, as he had to customize my therapy depending on the strength and range of motion I had after every session.” Breathtaking, I cried a little bit while interviewing him. Mr. Garza is a very strong man who didn’t get to follow his dream because of a sports injury, but he’s very…

I began my career in healthcare working as a behavior therapist for individuals on the autism spectrum. I worked as part of a care team centered on improving the quality of life for the clients we served. Working directly with a behavior analyst and a speech language pathologist, I assisted in developing and implementing therapeutic programs specific to my clients’ unique needs. I spent the majority of my time working one on one with clients running programs focused on decreasing aggressions, destructions, self-injurious behaviors, and increasing language and communication. I took data on the programs that I ran and communicated my client's progress to my supervisors as well as the…

There are three stages to having surgery. The first stage is learning about the procedure. The second stage is having the surgery performed, and the third stage is recovering. For me, recovering was the most challenging aspect and the emotional recovery left scars much larger than the lacerations from my surgery. These emotional scars required me to tend to them devoutly and they were the most difficult to heal.…

It was a hot summer night, and the wind was blowing in my face. The adrenaline was rushing through my veins, and I was ready to play. My opponent, equally as skilled as me, was dribbling down the soccer field with the same amount of intensity. She approached. As she was getting ready to make the pass to her teammate, our feet collided. Pain started shooting up from the bottom of my foot, to the top of my knee. I fell on the ground, and the coach comes to check on me. I am out of the game. All that preparing for that one moment, gone. Gone, because I had hurt my ankle. Gone, because I wouldn’t be able to play soccer again that season. Gone, because even though I didn’t know it, I would never be the same.…
