As the legendary Haddaway once said, what is love? The word itself, love, seems to just waft softly from the tongue like a petal would from a rose. How is it that such a small word, composed of only four letters, can mean a variety of things to so many different people across the globe? The four letters of which the word is composed of, form a single syllable sound from our lips when spoken. Love symbolizes so much more than what it can portray on paper, and for that matter, transcends beyond all types of media in existence.Love is unquantifiable. It is the subject of many artistic expressions such as poems, books, songs, paintings, and photography, all of which attempt to make sense of such a sublime feeling, word, thought, or emotion.Love is obsessive, everyone strives to attain it, yet only a lucky few ever find it.Love cannot be seen, touched, nor approved by any of the other human senses, yet we know that it exists. When we are in love, that we experience the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, and this happens because we allow ourselves to be completely vulnerable with our significant other. Without vulnerability, there is no trust, and without trust there is no foundation to build a meaningful relationship upon. Only that one person whom you truly care about without a doubt, is able to bring out the best in you and make you feel like you are able to sustain yourself on pure bliss and happiness alone. When you are in love, you will know that beyond a shadow of a doubt, you are experiencing and feeling love. Something stirs within your being, something that rocks your foundations and blurs the lines between reality and fantasy. This is perhaps one of the multiple reasons why love and the state of being in love is so intriguing. When in this state, or experiencing this feeling, it is as if your heart has grown 10 times larger, sprouted wings, and is attempting to break free from your body and soar through the skies. Whenever the loved person is…

Love, like many things, is undoubtedly complex and to define it would be impossible due to its subjectivity. We are told in forms of media and through social norms that love is supposed to be this true, authentic experience-regardless of the fact that no one experiences love the same way. A poetic Spanish proverb stated that “Where there is love, there is pain”. I believe that in order to be strong while in love, we must first become vulnerable and susceptible to pain. Love makes us strong because you cannot truly feel pain if you have not first felt happiness.…
