Loss Persuasive Speech
Tom,

The way you persevere is by staying. As a Chaplin how difficult has it been to "stay" when you are dealing with death? As you pray with people in the midst of death and after the loss of their loved one, do you have a set time that you can "stay" or preserve with the family? I know that loss is hard and that everyone deals with it differently. I know that some of the people that you are involved with may need you for the moment or seem to need you for a lifetime, but that there has to be an end in sight for your personal wellbeing.

One friend I had in particular made this her life’s mission. My friend was diagnosed with cancer only one week after her 13th birthday. The doctor told her that she was only expected to live another 6 months before she would succumb to her disease. As the 6 month date quickly approached, we felt as if there was a noose around our necks, getting tighter with each calendar day passing. But she was stronger than all of us. I can still remember her saying “Why bother moping over something I can’t control? I’m not just going to sit here and waste away, waiting to die.”…

My mom was a warrior because no matter how tired she was, the next day she always managed to get up in the morning for work like if nothing was wrong. The same thing went for me, I woke up each and every day with the same thought that someday would be the last by my mother's side. Once the doctors told her that she was cancer free, we all celebrated with such amazement because all the prayers and faith that we had paid off. But it was not over just yet, she still had damaged lungs and still to this very day she gets sick with lung infections and has to be admitted into the hospital for at least a week. I always thought that this obstacle was overcome the day the doctor told us the wonderful news of her being cancer free, but no we are still trying to overcome this tough and difficult obstacle in our lives. Even though my mom was the one dealing with the pain, she was a part of me, so the pain that she felt, I felt. In less than twenty-four hours my aunt passed away, followed by a dear friend. More recently, my great uncle died. He was like a father to many of us who, at one time in our lives, were fatherless. I have attended more funeral this year than any one person should have to. Each and every day someone wakes up to an empty spot on the bed beside them, or an empty house, or even without a parent or role model. My family has had to show great bravery in basically a long string of what seems like bad luck. Some of the deaths were from old age, some were from illness, and one was done intentionally before his time should have been up. I believe that if he had someone to teach him about God's love and how when everything seems to be going wrong one can turn to him, that I would still have an eighteen year old cousin, who loved life and what it has to offer. If he had shown true bravery he would still be here today. He showed fear by taking his own life and not trusting God to make a way. It would have helped if he hadn't been raised in a home where there was no God. His mother doesn't believe in Him. Even still, I believe that showing bravery by continuing with life and its hardships takes work. Adversity and bad luck seem to follow some around like a rain cloud. But with God's love and power, He can grant us an understanding to deal with the things that seem like too much to…

PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as the military combat, natural disasters, terrorism incidents, or any major tragedy. This is common in the life of veterans and is the leading cause of suicide among veterans. A VA patient who survived in Baghdad shares his experience with PTSD and explains how he knew he had this disability. Many veterans speak out about this issue and describe their continuous anger, alcohol addiction, and constantly wanted to fight. They usually feel very isolated and distant from their loved ones. One patient states, “PTSD involves rocketing into extreme states of stress re-activity; in the form of terror, rage, and uncontrollable impulses, and plunging into equally extreme states of being shut-down—exhaustion, emotional numbing, despair, and dissociation”. PTSD is about having fear and anxiety, allowing veterans to rage with anger and different emotion. There are many factors to PTSD, which affects others in different ways; or example, using video games to keep them occupied, spending money due to the lack of impulse control because of changes in their brain, and even not obtaining another job.…

I want you to take a look at you’re, any hand and ask your selves “Who’s hand is this?” Do the same with your other hand, and now both legs and your arms if you would like. If I am not mistaking the answer to all your questions are mine right. They are your hands, legs, and arms. What I am trying to get through to you all today is that your body is your body and that a person should be able to profit of his or her own body if done in a safe and controlled way.…
