Faith is the bed-rock of Christianity. Of all existing religions, Christianity is the only faith-centered religion. Other religions are wrongly labeled as “faiths”. The paradoxical phrase “paths of faith” has falsely elevated the other religions to a “faith” status. For, there is no other religion than Christianity which offers “faith” as a way of salvation to its adherents. Faith “marga” (way) is unique to Christianity. Faith is the essence of Christian teachings. Faith is indispensable to Christian life. From the time of its very inception, Christianity has evolved and developed the concept of faith. He is a composite whole. His parts are so united that he is a single unit of life. His parts are so interdependent and so freely interact and counteract with each other that he is one whole and functions as a one whole. This union is not confusion as understood by the theory of monism. The union of parts does not confuse the identity of the parts. The parts retain their identity and distinction and function distinctly but within the whole and for the benefit of the whole and never separately outside or against the whole. This wholeness did not last for long. Because the Holy Scriptures record that, fall, sin and curse marred the unity of man rendering him a fragmented being from within. According to hamartiology, humanity is collectively suffering from total depravity. The fall and sin have fragmented the human person and rendered the individual handicapped and impotent, unable to exercise the potential of faith. But, the good news is that, Christianity does not leave the broken mankind clueless of the remedy of sin. Soteriology, gives the infallible solution to man’s depravity. It offers man the “way of faith” as the free way of liberation from sin and brokenness. The object of Christian faith is Jesus Christ and his atoning death on the Cross. Each calling of the Holy Spirit accompanies the privilege of receiving a gift pack of divine enablements, vital one being the gift of faith enabling the believer to do the work of ministry. The third one is, the sociological faith: This is the perfecting faith. It is the fruit of the Holy Spirit. It is the result of the transforming and renewing ministry of the Holy Spirit in each Christian’s life. As result the Christian produces the nano(9)-flavored fruit of the Spirit growing and maturing into a suitable, edifying and productive member of the society of believers in Christ. Christian Theology, also, as it developed during the various stages of church history further articulated the nature of Christian faith. A careful understanding and interpretation of the concept of faith found in the whole of the Holy Scriptures by the Church through out its history added more clearer and theological understanding of faith. The dogmatic theology defined faith as “fides”, the firm persuasion of the truth of God’s revelation or truth itself considered as the object of belief. Faith is construed as subjective and objective in nature. The subjective faith is named “fides qua creditor,” the faith by which it is believed i.e. the faith of the believer that receives and holds the revelation of God. The objective faith is named “fides quae creditor,” the faith which is believed, i.e. the content of
