Tim McGraw's song, "Live Like You Were Dying" relates to William Bryant's poem, "Thanatopsis" because they both focus on living life to the fullest, so that when death strikes it will be welcomed and not feared. McGraw speaks of a friend who was told recently that he had cancer. Afterwards, instead of becoming fearful of the, "breathless darkness" (Bryant line 12), the man decided to go and accomplish everything he always wanted to do. Unfortunately the man realized that if he were to die then he would not be satisfied with the accomplishments in his life. As a result the man accomplished many great things such as, "skydiving, ...rocky mountain climbing,... [and riding] 2.7 seconds on a bull" (McGraw lines 52-54). In other words the man did…

As I Lay Dying consist of numerous narrations and individual sections. Each chapter containing a different character’s conscience and thought process. This is called stream of consciousness, by using this method it gives an expression to the confused and disordered flow of thoughts in each character. In addition, most of the chapters and narrators in the novel are from one single family, the Bundren family. In this family the members consist of Addie, Darl, Jewel, Cash, Anse, Dewey, and Vardaman. These characters present great intuition to the events and problems in the household.“It’s because he stays out there, right under the window, hammering and saw on that goddamn box” (14). Most authors give small details throughout the novel of where and when a story takes place, and the reader must piece the bits together. As I lay dying is no exception and like any other book gives many examples of setting. First off you can tell that the story takes place many years ago through simple statements given throughout the novel. For example, when it says that all of the women inside of the house had to use fans to cool themselves it suggests that air conditioning was not around yet, therefore it was an earlier time. (Page 81) Also throughout the entire beginning of the novel Cash’s only tools for building Addie’s coffin are a saw and hammer, there is no mention of any newer power tools. Then when Anse is talking…

This poem, like Before You Were Mine, is autobiographical, but more obviously so. Mrs. Tilscher is a real person, who taught Carol Ann Duffy in her last year at junior school. The poem is about rites of passage, the transition (move or change) from childhood to adolescence and the things we learn at school, from our teachers and from our peers. Duffy also associates the oppressive feeling we have in humid weather with the physical changes of puberty. Leaving primary school for the last time is like an escape we are eager to make but which takes us from safety into a dangerous unknown. Throughout the poem Duffy refers to "you". She means herself as she was in Mrs. Tilscher's class in the 1960s. But by writing in the second person she invites us to share her experience. Most readers will have had experiences like those Carol Ann Duffy depicts in this poem.…

In William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying it shows Darl's change from sanity to insanity as the novel unfolds. No one knows of this change until it is to late for them or Darl to do anything. Darl finds that his hold on reality starts to loosen as he figures out to himself that his mother does not exist if she is dead. Darl to others was always regarded as strange. "Nevertheless, he was regarded by others as strange"; as Cora Tull says, he was "the one that folks says is queer, lazy, pottering about the place no better than Anse."…

In the novel, As I Lay Dying, William Faulkner writes through the perspectives of several different characters. With this approach, we have a range of lenses to view the story from and are not limited to a single character’s opinion. Entering the story, a family of five children and their father are embarking on a nine day adventure to bury their deceased mother, Addie, in her hometown, Jefferson. Along their trip they encounter several obstacles, leaving Addie and her coffin in poor condition. As the conflict of the Bundren journey rises, Faulkner interrupts the character Darl’s monologue by incorporating a flashback to his memory of the past. For the last few days, I have been asking my friends what they would do if they had one month to live and their responses were all very similar in the way that they all said they would travel to some place they have always wanted to visit and do things like go on a cruise or go skydiving. I pondered about what I would do if I had one month to live until one late night I heard a country song play and it was called “Live like you were dying “ by Tim McGraw. In this song, he sings about a man who was sick and how he finally started living by loving and forgiving. And finally, it all came to me. Her mom, ever since she diagnosed Maddy with SCID herself, has been lying to her, so for about eighteen years and the lies come naturally to her, even though she doesn’t have SCID.
