Lingus By Snarky Puppy: Music Analysis
The piece Lingus by Snarky Puppy was very captivating. I was thoroughly impressed with each of the musicians and by this very modern feeling piece. Lingus sounds very different from what I have heard this semester. My initial thought was that this tune sounded like dubstep. Dubstep is a form of electronic dance music. After listening to the whole piece, I think Lingus is a fusion of jazz, rock, and funk. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this complex and different piece. Lingus would fit perfectly on a movie’s or even video game’s soundtrack, due to the energetic feeling. This is jazz, but it is a fusion of jazz and other genres.     2 came on I could instantly feel the Cuban vibe. From the islandic rhythms from what I believe to be claves, I get a sense of the Cuban beach. Whenever the rest of the orchestra joins the que, I could feel the locals surrounding me as these melodies and countermelodies contrasted and created something beautiful. This piece didn’t stay in one particular area for two long though, as time continued on it adapted and brought the festivities to different levels. One part of this piece I really enjoyed was the varying percussion and how it just built the rhythms from what seemed to be the island itself. This piece is an extreme culture shock compared to the last. We’re swarmed with happiness instead of sorrow. This piece doesn’t stay soft spoken for very long though. Constantly changing and keeping the audience on the edge of their seat, the conductor leads this orchestra.     One minute it’s upbeat “Spanish” rhythms and the next is slow and steady romantic pieces for the lovers within the drama. By the use of such musical connotations, the overall impact of the ballet is enhanced; so I would venture to say that this is utility music. I can also see the overall ballet as ternary form due to its three major sections. The first section in act one states the thematic material of a conjunct melody yet vivacious rhythmic patterns, connecting me with the carefree and in love feeling evoked. It carried a more elated structure. The second section, on the other hand, relays the contrasting theme of a darker more ambiguous tone. Then returning to the light in the final section restating that thematic material. However during act three, I also felt it had its own quick three part form. When the unwanted finance’s entrance is accompanied with the loud chromatic music and the cuts at the end of pieces causing disjunct melody are acknowledged, a contrast to the thematic material occurs. Though it does quickly returns to the blissful and contented connotation that began this section and all is well in the end.     The first half of the program included two pieces, Piano Quartet in E-flat major, K. 493 composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Die Gebüsche composed by Franz Schubert. The most impressive piece for me was the first one. It was a chamber music from classical period. This concerto-like quartet had three movements, which gave us an echoing through the performance. There was a material between piano and strings that changes along the piece. The first movement was a sonata-form Allegro. A bright and genial opening establishes the major tone of the entire piece. This sonata-allegro also had a lot of narrow leaps which allows me feel lively. The second movement Larghetto was like a rapt dialogue between piano and strings. It started with solo piano. Then, it has a downcast and made me fell leisure. The third movement Allegretto was the finale of the piece, which has a moderately paced rondo. The characteristics of classical music include symmetrical, balanced phrases melody, dance rhythms, diatonic, tonic-dominant harmony, multimovement sonata-allegro form and homophonic.     Beginning with the euphonium horn with piano accompaniment, the piece begins in the minor mode. The overall flow and melody is very simple, there was nothing ornate or over the top about the piece. The piano plays the melody continuously throughout the piece. The tempo is moderate and has nice beat as well. Further into the piece, the piano began playing more upbeat and changing into the major mode, while changing the tempo and also modulates into a different key.
