Life In New York City 1950's
New York City 1950’s Life in the 1950’s in New York was very different to the way people live today in the city. A number of things have changed to make the lifestyles and everyday life different from past generations. The transportation, tourist attraction, cost of general products and just technology in general. Transportation especially, has changed drastically. In the 1950’s trolleys, public buses and subways were common ways to get from place to place. Automobiles were common during this time too. As a result of automobiles being popular in 1957, New York installed modern fixed lighting by the highways so that travelers could have access to light 24/7 (ECM.com).

African-American presence was minimal on TV shows after 1953 was largely demeaning in the roles available in radio drama. But radio drama on the other hand offered wider possibilities for black stations like WDIA that began in 1947 in Memphis. Numerous stations devoted time to black radio in the 1950s and it became difficult to distinguish the colour of the musicians they were listening to as racial styles began to blur, which was an added advantage. This compelled Susan Douglas to call 1950s radio a “trading zone” between white and black culture revealing as much “about the emptiness and forced conformity of white culture as it did “about the new ambitions of blacks” (223). Folk music, jazz and rock ‘n’roll defined the period. Folk and jazz, the older forms underwent transitions postwar. Rock ‘n’ roll, a new trend emerged out of rhythm and blues, a strain of black music often called ‘race music’ in 1940s, which later became sound of the 1950s. Second half of the decade, particularly between 1956 and 1958,was ruled by Commercial imperatives and major labels. Creative musical energies were in full flow, not repeated until…

Living conditions in the twenty-first century differ greatly from conditions in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Education and family or more specifically, the role and rights of women in the family, are examples of the differences. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, education was required for children of 6 years to 12 years. Now, most children attend school from when they are 5 years old to 18 years old. The Woman's role in the family has also changed. Now marriage, teaching or working in a factory aren't the most available careers for women. They can find many jobs that would not have even existed in in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries open to them. Many women decide be a "stay-at-home mom" to take care…

In the 1920’s New York was more important to jazz than Chicago. Although Chicago had this larger than life aspect Giola says it was often less glamorous and that the “nightspots were often makeshift rather than opulent” New york, on the other hand, African Americans created these new societies with the development of Harlem. New york was the 2nd most segregated city and this lead to black living in congested areas one of which being Harlem. Harlem was overpopulated with African American living in the city this lead to the concept of blacks being whites due to the fact that there were more black people in the area than whites, which made the minority. Harlem allowed for two types of African Americans to emerge. The first type of blacks were…

Socially, economically and, politically, the 1950's were the "happy days." The 1950's were marked with many historical events, positive and negative. The decade had its downfalls, but they were nothing compared to the improvement of life in all aspects. The economy was booming, making families feel more financially stable than they had in years. There was an "explosion of science and technology"(Brinkley 803). Medical advances, at this time, included the polio vaccination. Unemployment was down, the economy was up, and family life showed the morale of the American people was much higher than it had been in many years.…

New York City is known as a center of art, culture, fashion and finance with iconic sites such as Times Square, The Statue of Liberty, and The Empire State Building. There are certain aspects which are easily identified with New York City such as skyscrapers, rap, the subway, and Broadway. However, in my mind, there is one aspect of New York City which I feel represents the city as a whole. One place that can be found in each neighborhood with different ambiences and different people. Diners are delightful environments and food joints serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Diners show the traits which make New York City so enjoyable for me.…
