b. This event took place from June 4th, 1805 to July 4th, 1805. June 13th was the date in which Lewis and his small party first witnessed the Great Falls of the Missouri River. c. This event happened at the portage around the Great Falls of the Missouri River. Lewis described the scene as “the reflection of the sun on the spray or mist which arises from these falls is a beautiful rainbow produced which adds not little to the beauty of this majestically grand scenery”. d. Facts below about what happened in the situation; e. 1) Lewis and Clark had been communicating with the Native Americans for a long time about a so-called “water route” (Missouri River) prior to the expedition 2) When they saw the portage, they saw it as a way of transporting food and supplies throughout the duration of their expedition. 3) The Great Falls provided food and leather clothing for the explorers to stock up on for their expedition. 4) They estimated the portage to be about a mile in length. But after they discovered four large waterfalls, they realized it would be far longer than they expected. 5) Their discovery of the portage around the Great Falls meant that the explorers had found the best fork in the Mississippi River.

f. This event affected the expedition because the Corps had to face a portage of 18 miles over rugged, unbroken ground covered in prickles, rattlesnakes, and grizzly bears. Thus slowing down the explorer’s expedition g. This event affected the Native Americans
