Ortiz crossed paths with one of De Soto’s men Baltasar de Gallegos. He was under attack in an open field, Ortiz and his native followers confronted Baltasar de Gallegos and realized that Ortiz was a “Christian” and he took Ortiz to De Soto. De Soto used Ortiz as his guide because he was familiar with the land, as he stated in his letter “As soon as I landed I was informed that a Christian, Juan Ortiz, was in the power of a cacique of the country. I accordingly dispatched Baltasar de Gallegos with forty horsemen and as many foot soldiers, to bring him to camp.” Ortiz and ten of the natives met with Baltasar de Gallegos and De Soto as he stated, “I was much pleased with this good fortune.” The presence of Ortiz increased the possibility of…

The book you wrote about your life The Other Side of the Sky I thought was very intense and suspenseful overall an amazing story. I just can’t get over the fact that not only against all odds, seeing that you were two women in the Middle East and all but also you had to pretty much take care of your mom through your journey to America. I also loved how you really kept the faith and stayed strong, that must have been hard when at some points like after 911 it seemed like you weren’t going to America at all, I really do admire your determination. Now how was it that you knew America would be like Germany, when you were trying to convince your mom to apply for the world relief program you always used your trip to Germany as a comparison…

King spent eight days in his cell. During that time he composed his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." The letter was ostensibly conceived in response to a letter that had recently run in a local newspaper, which had claimed that the protests were "unwise and untimely"; however, King also quite deliberately wrote his letter for a national audience. The letter reveals King's strength as a rhetorician and his breadth of learning. It alludes to numerous secular thinkers, as well as to the Bible. It is passionate and controlled, and was subsequently appropriated by many writing textbooks as a model of persuasive writing. At the time, it gave a singular, eloquent voice to a massive, jumbled movement.…

France 1916 To Azaire, Tenderness encapsulated in an icy cavern, a tiny glow worm surrounded within a sphere of darkness. This is how you made her feel Azaire. Years of self-pity. Can you even comprehend being defenceless? Living in fear? No, I couldn’t too at first, after everything you put her through, but lying here four feet underground, living in fear... comes naturally. The shadow of apprehension ignites a catalyst for me to find myself amongst the greatest heartbreak.…

We are writing to you to advocate for the continuance of Miss. Degenhardt’s (Profe) teaching career at Darien High School. We write with the purpose to make you aware of Profe’s profound impact on the community and the growth of her students both in the context of academics and ethics; her notable qualities and dedication to her profession are of a role model. While Profe’s style of teaching is unorthodox at some points, this unorthodoxy provides students with a diverse and meaningful education in an otherwise, orthodox day. A quality that is central to Profe’s teaching and persona is her receptiveness to student opinion, which in our opinion should be a constant in all student-teacher relationships. For example, if a student feels that a decision in terms of either a grade or punishment she made was unjust, Profe is fully open to a one-on-one discussion, either during a mutual free or before or after school. Profe’s actions reject the notion of “my way or the highway” and epitomize the characteristic of open-mindedness: a quality that is crucial in our increasingly globally connected society. For a personal anecdote, during a student’s sophomore year he felt that he did not deserve grade X; therefore, he approached Profe and asked to meet with her before school. The student and Profe discussed the grade and while the grade remained unchanged, he had a better understanding as to why he received grade X and how he can avoid receiving grade X in the future. In another, unrelated circumstance, Profe organizes an annual in-class food drive to afford families in the Bronx a decent Thanksgiving meal, which reveals her altruism and devotion to paying it forward. Moments such as these are what define Profe’s impact and overall career to DHS and academia. As a community, we are here to support a teacher who has supported us. Thank you in advance for your time.…

As a Registered Nurse who has been employed at various managed care payers, I know firsthand the corruption and abuse that is typical of health insurance companies. It is political corruption that has allowed this situation to continue. Right now Congress and the President are fighting over how much to slash Medicare and Medi-Cal/Medicaid benefits. The American people don't want to see this happen. National, single-payer healthcare (H.R. 676) is pro-business, and pro-people.…
