Preparatory Activities for Fine Motor Skills

Activity:
Pouring beans from one jug to two unequal bowls

Type:
Individual

Age:
2 ½ years onwards

Materials:
One jug, two unequal bowls, beans, tray and mat.

Procedure:

Note: The directress has to ensure that the material is adequate, clean and in proper order for use.

• Invite the child to begin the Work Cycle.
• Show the child where the mat is placed.
• Ask the child to carry the mat to the work area and unroll the mat.
• Show the child where the tray containing the materials is kept.
• Ask the child to carry the tray to the work area holding the tray on its sides with both hands and place the tray on the mat.
• Introduce the material to the child.
• Grasp the handle of the jug with the index and middle fingers of the right hand. The right thumb is placed on top of the handle.
• Stabilize the underside of the jug with index and middle fingers of the left hand.
• Gently tilt and pour in the bowls from top to bottom.
• Since the activity involves pouring in two unequal bowls there will be a remainder left in the jug which needs to be shown to the child.
• Replace the jug on the mat ensuring the handle is to the left of the tray.
• Pick up any spilled beans with a pincer grip, show it to the child and place it in the last filled bowl.
• Pick up the top bowl with all fingers of both hands and gently pour the beans into the jug. Replace the bowl.
• Pick up the bottom bowl with all fingers of both hands and gently pour the beans into the jug. Replace the bowl.
• Pick up any spilled beans with a pincer grip, show it to the child and place it in the jug.
• Place the jug and the bowls in the centre of the tray.
• Invite the child to have a turn.
• End the work cycle.

Control of error:

• Less spillage
• Noise of spilling the beans

Points of Interest:

• Introduce the jug and the two unequal bowls to the child.
• Use the three dominant right hand fingers to hold the jug
