P4.1- I have been involved in identifying hazards in my setting, such as in the water play area, the children accidently spilling water on the floor from splashing the water out of the water bowl whilst playing with the fishing set. Also from trying to experiment with pouring and filling their cups at snack time. Therefore, because this happened I proceeded to use in initiative and clean up the spillage on the floor with a mop. The procedure I had took in this situation was that I asked the children to step away from the puddle on the floor and I informed one other staff about what I had seen and asked if they can keep an eye on children while I went to go and get a mop or a towel to clean up the spilt area. I then went to collect the appropriate facilities and clean up the wet area so the children would not slip over and hurt themselves. I then informed a member of staff a child had got wet so they changed the clothes of a child, as they was wet from playing in the water and it then I put a dry towel on the floor so if there is another spillage, the towel will keep it fairly dry.
P4.2- It is important to understand the different policy’s that provide a healthy and safe environment for staff and children. When I have identified the hazard I will have to clean it up straight away. This is so the children do not fall over and injure them self, also that no members of staff including myself fall over and injure ourselves. It mentions in the health and safety policies that when there is a spillage on the floor you must clear the area and mop up the spillage. I now know how to follow the settings policies and procedure as I have a copy of them at home therefore I can keep looking through them and making sure I am following the rules.
P4.3- If this was to happen again I would act quicker in dealing with the situation because I noticed while I was cleaning another child was pouring water into their cup and almost spilled it. I should be a lot more alert and quicker next

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each child’s physical needs. Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times by sight and sound even during nap times. Making sure all outlets are covered so children can’t access them. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets. I am certified in First Aid and CPR, which makes me knowledgeable of caring for accidents or injuries.…

Health and safety is monitored and maintained by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks. When ensure that this is done by carrying out risk assessments and daily checks on a regular basis and if any health and safety issues arise with the equipment or environment we will attend to these issues and recorded the information and remove any fault from the area and ensure that other members of staff are aware of these issues. Plug socket covers, safety gates and door stoppers are monitored and maintained by checking that plug socket covers are in all sockets and check that none are broken, if any plug socket covers are found broken they should be removed and replaced with new. When children arrive at the setting safety gates must be in place before children attended so that no children can leave the setting. Door stoppers must be put in place to ensure that children don’t trap their fingers in the door when going out and all members of staff must put these in place and if any fall of the door members of staff should replace them immediately. Personal protective equipment must be available at all times and all staff should use this when changing nappies, cleaning up sick and if a child is bleeding. When wearing personal protective equipment we stop the spread of germs and cross contamination to anyone else. If any member of staff notices that personal protective equipment is getting low on stock that member of staff should inform the manager so more personal protective equipment can be ordered. DBS checks should be carried out before anyone is to start working in the setting because safeguarding is a major issue when working with children and is the duty of the setting manager to ensure that all members of staff hold a…

I have a duty of care to ensure that all children under my care and assistants who work alongside me are kept safe from harm. This means I must carry out risk assessments to ensure that their environment is a safe and clean space for them to explore, work and play in. I also teach the children the dangers some of their actions can have on themselves and others and actively encourage both children and assistants I work with to report any dangers they may find in the setting, such as broken toys. I also have a duty of care to safeguard children in recording any unexplained marks or bruising which may give cause for concern and reporting these concerns to Somerset’s Safeguarding Children’s Board if reasonable explanation is not given or I deem it necessary. I also record any accidents or incidents that occur whilst the children are under my care and inform the children’s families of the medical assistance I may have given. Following these accidents/incidents I review how the accident/incident could’ve been prevented and address these issues appropriately in my risk assessments and my continual reflective diary.…

Each of these pieces of legislation are equally as important in ensuring that the upmost health and safety is provided in childcare settings. The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, states that employers have a duty to; make the workplace as safe as possible, display a health and safety guidance poster, or a hand out leaflet with the same information. They must decide upon how to manage health and safety, and this must be stated within a workplace policy. The employees of the company also have a duty to work safely. They must follow all guidance which is given, and should never work in a way which would put themselves and others in danger. If there is ever any problem, the employee has a duty to report these, so that can be resolved quickly and efficiently. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), states that, safe workplaces depend on a careful approach to cleaning materials, or other hazardous substances. There should be risk assessments taken for each substance which could cause harm, such as bleach or solvents. This will tell workers about the dangers, and what they can do to minimise the risks which…

E1. There are many responsibilities that practitioners have when maintaining professional relationships and one of these is to respect the views of parents and children. One of these responsibilities is to respect the views of parents and children; this is so that both parents and children know that they have a secure relationship with the practitioner but a relationship that stays within the setting which means that practitioners should be friendly but not friends. Another responsibility that practitioners have is to communicate effectively with parents, children and colleagues; this is to ensure that practitioners talk to everyone in a professional and non-judgemental way; this is to also show everyone that they respect that person. Maintaining confidentiality is another responsibility that practitioners have when maintaining professional relationships this is to ensure that no personal or important information gets said to the wrong people and even if you are talking to a parent or a colleague you need to keep some things confidential. One other responsibility that practitioners have when maintaining professional relationships is to ensure that children’s safety is not at risk; this could be something as simple as keeping doors and gates locked and carrying out regular risk assessments to ensure that no children in the setting get hurt. This will also satisfy parents as they know that their child is safe at all times and allows them to communicate effectively with practitioners.…

My chosen Professional that works with children is a counsellor. This is a type of therapy in which a child may speak to an adult in confidence. A counsellor is trained to listen and try to encourage the patient to do better in that certain area. Counselling helps to overcome a traumatic experience or helps the child think in a better frame of mind, although the counsellor will not give the patient advice; but will make the patient think of ways to help the situation themselves. Counselling helps a person talk about how they are feeling when facing a new task or situation. The counsellor will speak to the patient and help them figure out why they are thinking that way. A counsellor may encourage the patient to have an understanding of a situation and take personal responsibility. Counsellors will talk about the patient and allow the patient to express their true feelings without judging or criticizing them. There are many different types of counsellor, for example;…

To establish and maintain a healthy environment is to prevent the spread of germs and promote healthy eating habits. Germs can be easily spread among the age group of children. One of the ways I promote a healthy environment is hand washing. I wash my hands and wear gloves before and after handling food, helping with toileting, changing diapers and cleaning noses. I have the children wash their hands during similar times and ensure that they do it properly. Cleaning and sanitizing play areas daily and mouthed toys are immediately removed from the play area and sanitized at the end of the day.…

At my work placement I witnessed numerous hazards most of them were common liquid spillages from this I acted reliable and did the appropriate action by removing the children from the area, placing a wet floor sign over the spillage so no one will slip and injure themselves then by using warm water and adding disinfector to mop up the wet floor. Secondly the location that I have chosen were the children’s toilets I went in there to clean my hands and the state of the toilets were awful they didn’t flush the toilets and they had stains. Also the tissues were left on the floor and all over the toilet seats, from this I removed all the tissues then I notified a member of staff about the situation. Thirdly another hazard that I saw at my work placement was that a child ate a bread stick that was on the floor with other pieces of bread sticks underneath the snack table, when I witnessed it I went to get a dustpan and brush immediately to clear up the area from underneath the table and I also told the children to remain seated while they were eating or drinking. Fourthly the last hazard that I saw was when an autistic child hit the mirror in their dressing corner. As the child had autism, at times he was very aggressive and violent. As soon as I saw the broken mirror/ glasses on the floor, I went and cleared up the floor with broom stick. Whilst clearing up the floor I informed the other practitioner so they are aware of the broken pieces of glass. I also told the practitioner to remove all the children from that room and take them in another room for their health and safety.…

The three different types of setting are statutory, voluntary and private, each of these areas and provide different types of care and education. Statutory education is where the state fund the setting and it is run by the government. Voluntary education is done for free, the carer or the setting volunteer to do the work. This would include leisure activities such as Brownies, Cubs or other types of youth clubs. The workers that are within the setting, do this for free or as a hobby, however if there were to be trips for the children, they would then have to pay expenses. Private is totally different to these two types of settings. Private settings aim to gain money and are a profitable company/business. This includes private tutors, clubs, babysitting, and even some primary/ secondary school and nurseries. Statutory settings don’t usually make any money, as the education is free for the child, such as primary schools, high school, and some nurseries. However statutory settings don’t always include education, they also include health and care. The NHS is a state run health program where children of all ages can receive free medication, doctors’ appointments and are also eligible for free dentistry. Children are also entitled to Child Care Services; this is from the state where if the child were in danger within their home they have a right to be protected by the Child Care Services. Other statutory services available to children are libraries and other leisure activities. This is due to not having to pay a membership and they are still able to access the setting.…

Piget believed that children learn and go through stages and sequences. We practice this in nursery by using age assessment development sheets. Piget believed that children are active learners, and so we can encourage them through play and activities. It is also believed that children imitate and transform what they learn into symbolic behaviour. We use this information by rewarding the well behaved children, in the hope that the other children will copy and imitate the good behaviour.…
