Lenny Diary
DIARY ENTRY
Lennie after Crushing Curleys Hand
October 9th 2012

I done a bad ting..... I really bad ting! Why’d I have to do it! I know George already told me it ain' my fault but why’d I have to do it! I disappointed 'im, I know I did! I don’t wan'a' make George sad. No never. George never makes me sad on purpose. Sometimes he tells me his life would have been better without me. He tells me he could have been goin' to cat houses every night but he tells me he doesn' mean it. He always says that in the end.

But luckily George told me it isn' my fault. He told me I did the right thing. I’m happy George told me I did the right thing. Now George is gonna let me tend the them rabbits. And I'm gonna be able to feed em' the alfalfa, to cut em grass, an' to give them water. But Curly ain’t as big as them rabbits. So what if George changes his mind. What if he tells me I hurt Curly and Curly ain’t as big as them rabbits.

Oh I didn’t meant it. I ain’t never want to hurt nobody but Curly was hurting me and George told me to. I remember! He said 'Get 'im Lennie. I said get him' and I was just doin' what George told me. George ain’t never gonna do me harm and George is the one who took me after aunt Clara died. George tells me what to do for everything and I remember what George tells me. Back then when I done a bad thing in Weed and we had to flee to 'ere, he told me to hide in the brush If i get into trouble. Yep that’s what 'e said, he said 'Hide til I come for you. Don’t let nobody see you. Hide in the brush by the river. Say that over'. He said if I get into trouble that’s what I do. And I've been repeatin' that for days now I have. Me and George do everything together we do because I'm there for him and hes there for me. In Weed, with that pretty girls dress, and her ratting out on me to the police, George never left me, George ran away with me. George ain’t never gonna do me no harm.

I didn’t mean to crush it I really didn’t! Curly was havin' a go at me and I didn’t know what to do. He started it! And I was telling George to make um stop. Then is when he told me to get him so I got him alright. I wouldn’t never of kept holdin' him if he wasn’t so fidgety. I couldn’t let go! And George was telling me to let go but I couldn’t. I kept hearing every bone crushing but I just couldn’t let go. I was panickin' just like in Weed. She was worse than Curly, with all her yellin'. She wouldn't stop. But Curly, he just kept movin' that little punk! So I had to keep holdin' on. I didn’t mean to crush him. He was flopping like a fishy. That’s what he was doing, he was flopping like a fishy. Whouu, I don t like fishy's. Their scaly and rough. They ain’t soft. I love soft things. Puppies I love pups. And slim, slim told me was gonna give me one of them pups. He promised me he did but now I ain’t sure if I'm gonna get no puppy. And I weally love puppies. They’re so soft. They’re really really soft. If I get one of them puppies its gonna be called George. If its a girly it'll be Georgina.

This diary entry, written from the point of view of Lennie Small is written in a child like way due to Lennie's child like mind and behavior. Lennie, although a big man, is timid and slightly reckless. Its a difficult match as many see him as this big man, when in the inside, hes just an innocent slightly clumsy boy. He is innocent, loving and trustworthy although at the same time he is also irresponsible, forgetful and doesn’t know how to keep in his anger. In this diary entry, I tried to incorporate Lennies childish like behavior, like when he mispronounces things, and when he gets distracted with one topic and moves to another quickly, with his forgetfulness, having to remind himself what George tells him. I also tried to show his trust when he repeats how George will never do him no harm and how he is there for George and George is there for him.

In the end of the final chapter George kills Lennie. It might seem like he's being mean, proving Lennie's statement that George is always nice to him wrong. I don't think that George is being mean by killing Lennie, on the contrary, I think George is being nice by doing so. If George hadn't done it, Lennie would have suffered much more. Curly was angry because Lennie killed his wife and he wanted to make him suffer for it.…

“If you ever just happen to get in trouble like you have always done before, I want you to come right here and hide in the brush.”(doc B) In the story Of Mice and Men there are two main characters, George and Lennie. George is average sized and intelligent, and Lennie is tall, very muscular, and below average. George and Lennie have a farm dream that they will own land, so they go to work on a ranch to earn money. A worker there, Candy, offers to go in with 300 dollars. Everything is looking good until Lennie accidentally kills Curley’s wife, and Curley is a hothead. He wants to kill Lennie very painfully, but George gets there first. He has to shoot him in the back of the head. Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to indicate the deaths of the farm dream, Curley’s wife, and Lennie.…

George, in killing Lennie, avoided a slow and painful death for him by lynching -- or getting killed by a mob without the right to a trial in court. Curley wanted to shoot him in the guts, where he would have a slow and painful death. If he were locked in an insane asylum, they would have left him by himself, having nobody to talk to, and, according to Crooks, “ a guy goes nuts if he ain’t got nobody”…

God a'mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could go get a job an' work, an' no trouble…”(11) George has to constantly deal with Lennie and that is what gives George distress. The fact that Lennie is able to put all of his troubles on George, makes George have a much more troublesome life. Lennie doesn’t have to take on the weight as much as George because George is the person who takes it on himself. What George is saying is that Lennie constantly gives him a large amount of concern and without Lennie, he would’ve have a much easier and better life. George lives a more difficult life than Lennie because of how much trouble Lennie has given him. Another reason why George has a more difficult life than Lennie, is that George has decided to kill his own best friend. In specific, when George finds Lennie in the brush after Lennie had killed Curley’s wife, he “...raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie's head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand…

This prevents George from getting to Lennie to save him from his mistake. For example, in the book it states, “[Curly] turned suspiciously on George. ‘You're comin’ with us, fella.’”(Steinbeck 98) This quotation proves that Curly held George back from getting to help Lennie. George even makes the attempt to trick Curly and the ranchers into going the other way. For example, in the book George states, “‘We come from the north so he would of went south.’” (Steinbeck 97) This quotation proves that even if George tried every trick in the book he wouldn't be able to stop the ranchers from finding and killing…

George did the right thing by shooting Lennie. First, when Candy finds Curley’s wife laying in the hay dead he immediately gets George. George's first thought is to lock Lennie up, but then realizes that the guys and Curley would want him lynched (Steinbeck 94). When Candy gets Slim and the guys attention to come into the barn George comes in behind them and pleads to Slim to have Lennie be brought in to be locked up. Slim says “s’pose they lock him up an’ strap him down and put him in a cage.…

George and Lennie are relatively great friends and they are only close because they were close to Aunt Clara when she had passed. Lennie likes soft things, such as velvet and silk. Although Lennie has not always had access to such, he likes to pet mice. He had killed the mice, though, due to how strong he was. Lennie had dreamed of keeping a rabbit farm with George, and he loved how soft the rabbits were and looked. When Lennie had seen Slim’s pups, Lennie had pet one and he had been too rough with it, so fourth killing it. George knew that all these events were leading up to something much worse than mice. One afternoon when the guys were playing horseshoes, Lennie and Curley’s wife were talking. Curley’s wife wanted Lennie to feel how soft her hair was,…

Curly began agitated as he could not find his wife. He then began to assume the worst (involving other men working on the ranch). He soon grew embarrassed when he found these assumptions not to be true. Taking this rage out on Lennie, he began to punch and beat the child like man. Lennie defenseless and bewildered looked around the room for instructions when old friend George soon directed him to fight back, leading to the small man to look even smaller.…

Although George seems to be a knowledgeable and kind person, he often can feel lonely at times. George relies on Lennie for company, and companionship. An example of this, is when George says to lennie; “I could get along so easy and nice without you on my tail.”(p7) George says this to Lennie, because George really loves lennie but doesn't want to show any sign of compassion towards Lennie.…

Someday—we’re gonna get the jack together and we’re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an’ a cow and some pigs and—""An’ live off the fatta the lan’," Lennie shouted. "An’ haverabbits. Go on, George! Tell about what we’re gonna have in the garden and about the rabbits in the cages and about the rain in the winter and the stove, and how thick the cream is on the milk like you can hardly cut it. Tell about that George."Why’n’t you do it yourself? You know all of it."No…you tell it. It ain’t the same if I tell it. Go on…George. How I get to tend the rabbits."Well," said George, "we’ll have a big vegetable patch and a rabbit hutch and chickens. And when it rains in the winter, we’ll just say the hell with goin’ to work, and we’ll build up a fire in the stove and set around it an’ listen to the rain comin’ down on the roof—Nuts!"(Steinback 119-120). I love this qoute because it shows how much Lennie loves George and how much he loves the story. Also how george is gonna be there to help him get there one way or another.…

''You crazy bastard, I always said without you I could do whatever the hell I wanted, take my fifty bucks at the end of month and spent the whole damn night in a cat house for all I cared! Though I know you didn't do it out of meanness, I had to shoot you, I couldn't let them hurt you, I didn't want too,'' George stood up nobly and said firmly, ''I'll get that weak bastard, Curley, for you.
