Leif Eriksson: Who Discovered The Americas?
The question of who discovered the Americas and when has been a very debatable topic. Its believed that in 984-1000 A.D. Viking voyagers led Leif Eriksson first set foot in the Americas. It is unsure if Eriksson sailed off course on his way home to Greenland or if he intended to go to these lands after hearing of them by word of mouth from traders. Its believed that Eriksson is the first European to reach these lands and explored the region. After spending a winter Ericksson sailed back home to Greenland and never returned to the Americas. Five hundred years later in the 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed to find new trade routes and accidently landed in the Americas or known to the Europeans as the 'New World'.
