Comparing and contrasting an historical and a contemporary artifact.
Christina Smith

Leggings have been in use since the 14th century in Europe. Through history, leggings have evolved and adapted for various uses. Modern leggings are typically made from a blend of lycra, Spandex, nylon, cotton, or polyester blend, but they can also be made from wool, silk and other materials. Comparison
In comparison, leggings in history, have always had a specific purpose and played a significant part in how the wearer carried out his or her everyday tasks. They were made from much tougher materials and were not necessarily comfortable.

Toward the end of the 1770s, a new type of dress for boys began to emerge. Knee breeches were cast off in favor of trousers, which were emerging for the first time as acceptable fashionable dress. Trousers, buttoned together at the waist, were accompanied by a short jacket, an outfit that became known as a skeleton suit and usually worn with a soft fall collar shirt. At the same time it became fashionable for young girls to wear light unboned muslin frocks, short sleeved with a natural waistline and adorned with a simple ribbon sash about the waist. In this picture, it depicts a man wearing a knee-high pant called breeches. These were common for a man to wear in the 17th century. Men also wore these pants with canions which were tight garments that extended from the waist to the knee, also common in the second half of Queen Elizabeth’s reign. As an undergarment and a base for most men, men wore hosen which was a close-fitting stocking. Some nobles even wore knitted silk hosen, which was of course more expensive. Garters were worn in order to hold up these stockings. A doublet was a close-fitting waist-length jacket with a short peplum extending from the waistline. Doublets were either sleeveless or with sleeves and had front and side closings. A peplum was a short, decorative skirting attached to the doublet.…
