JAPN 3162: Paper 1
Professor Anri Yasuda
The Goddess of Exams
As a student who has once experienced Korean educational competition for high school and university, there was a bond of sympathy to a drama, Goddess of Exams. A number of students start to prepare for a university entrance exam called, โSoo-neung.โ Just for one examination, students and their parents put a lot effort to enter better middle school than others, and further this leads to entrance into superior high school. In short words, students spend their teenage life preparing for incessant entrance examinations.
Not only Korea but also Japanese Students have to take entrance examination for junior high school, high school and university, if they change institution. It is always the case in public schools and universities. University entrance exams, "juken" are particularly hard and is often referred to as "exam hell" ("shiken jigoku"). Students who fail the "juken" become "rounin", a term formerly used for masterless samurai. Preparatory schools called "yobikou" (ไบๅๆ ก) have for sole task to drill these students for the entrance exams. Some private schools do everything from kindergarten to university. In that case, students will only have to take an entrance examination or interview when they join the school, and are generally exempt afterwards. This is called the "elevator system", meaning that once someone has entered the institution,...
...first talk about my country, Korea. It might help you understand my point. After the Korean War, South Korea was one of the poorest countries in the world. Koreans had to start from scratch because entire country was destroyed after the Korean War, and we had no natural resources.
Koreans used to talk about the Philippines, for Filipinos were very rich in Asia. We envy Filipinos. Koreans really wanted to be well off like Filipinos. Many Koreans died of famine. My father and brother also died because of famine. Korean government was very corrupt and is still very corrupt beyond your imagination, but Korea was able to develop dramatically because Koreans really did their best for the common good with their heart burning with patriotism.
Koreans did not work just for themselves but also for their neighborhood and country. Education inspired young men with the spirit of patriotism.
Forty years ago, President Park took over the government to reform Korea. He tried to borrow money from other countries, but it was not possible to get a loan and attract a foreign investment because the economic situation of South Korea was so bad. Korea had only three factories. So, President Park sent many mine workers and nurses to Germany so that they could send money to Korea to build a factory. They had to go through horrible experience.
In 1964, President Park...

LeeMin Hoo Umibig Sa Isang Pilipina
*BRIEF HISTORY OF TAEKWONDO*
Early Koreans developed unique martial art forms for unarmed self defense to complement their skills with weapons. The first recorded evidence of what was to become modern Tae Kwon Do is found about two thousand years ago in Korean history. A mural painting from the Koguryu kingdom (37 B.C to 66 A.D.) was found in a tomb believed to have been built sometime during the period 3 to 427 A.D . This mural depicts figures practicing martial arts techniques. Historical records from this Koguryu period also mention the practice of martial arts techniques and tournaments. The early forms had different names, such as Kwonbak, Bakhi, Dangsoo, Taesoo and Kongsoo. From about 600 A.D. to about 1400, the main stream dominant form was Soobak, which further evolved into Taekyon beginning in the late 1300s. Taekyon was the dominant Korean martial art form until the Japanese invasion and occupation of Korea in 1909. From 1909 to 1945, the Japanese suppressed Korean culture and martial arts, and introduced Japanese culture and martial arts.
The modern period of Taekwondo began with the defeat of the Japanese and the liberation of Korea in 1945. Korean martial arts masters wanted to eliminate Japanese influences. They began discussions on how to return to the traditional Taekyon based...
