EXCELLENT STUDY SKILLS AND INFORMATION LITERACY

ABSTRACT

Open and Distance Learning is an alternative platform for people who want to pursue their tertiary education. This is especially true in the case of working professionals who wish to learn while on their job.

However, it has always been a challenge to cope with learning verifying degrees of skills as they lack face to face interaction when compared to traditional learners. The main challenge of distance learning is that direct real-time feedback from the students or teachers is not possible.

Therefore, as an open and distance learner, achieving consistent excellent academic performance is the key to students’ success at university. To achieve that, one must have good understanding on excellent study skills and information literacy. It is also requires clear objectives, motivation, planning, self discipline, self confidence, good study habits and a positive attitude.

By learning an excellent study skills and information literacy, it will help to elevate student closer to success.

INTRODUCTION

According to Schumaker and Sheldon (1985), “study skills that provided to open and distance learner (ODL) are to equip them with the necessary techniques, principles and knowledge to function efficiently as an ODL Lerner which enable a student to learn to solve problems and complete tasks independently” (in Gordon, 1994).

Whilst the Information Literacy defines as the ability to know when there is a need for information, to be able to identify, locate, evaluate and effectively use that information for the issue or problem at hand. It is a central to the learning process and forms the foundation of lifelong learning.

Therefore, excellent study skills and information literacy because somewhat it can help us in overcoming challenge as online student.
