“Great leaders find ways to connect with their people and help them fulfill their potential.” a quote from Steven J. Stowell. Stowell is the author of the book The Coach. This book is about the coaching process and skills. This topic important to me because when I grow up, I want to be a dance teacher. Also, coaches can be super supportive and helpful about activities you also want to do. Some of the activities could be joining another sport, or running for student president. I personally think that some of the best leaders are coaches, especially ones that motivate you.…

Not everyone has it in them to be a great leader. Most people do, but do not accept the challenge. Some people may also believe that they are leaders but are not truly fit or put the position to lead in a way that would be aspiring to others. According to Mrs. Stephanie Fontenot, leadership is one of the most important aspects in the classroom and on the basketball court. As soon as she was asked the question,…

Everything that a person encounters, either physically or just by knowledge, shapes how that person behaves and respond to everyday situations. With that in mind, I can better understand myself and the people around me. These differences are what brings fresh and new interactions that colleges thrive on. Ranging from the schools I attended, the way I was raised, and even the neighborhood outside my doorstep brings different experiences for me. With these factors, I have no doubt that I would contribute to something beautiful to The Ohio State University.…

Leadership is a prized commodity, however, it is not one that has always come naturally to me. I was a rather quiet kid growing up, and so I rarely let my voice be heard while I was at school. Despite my timid nature, I was able to develop enough self-confidence to open up to others and share my feelings through baseball. Baseball is truly a team sport, requiring constant communication and trust between teammates. As such, the close companionship I held with my team mates created the ideal environment for me to develop my leadership skills. Base running was always my strongest skill, so I constantly found myself teaching my teammates how to gain the advantage. I became the unofficial base running coach year after year, even as the teams changed…

Through the course, I learned about leadership different styles and how they emerged and developed from the Trait Theories that focus on the leader characteristics to the Goal Orientations Theories that require collaborative methods between leaders and followers. As I mentioned before, I had always linked the leadership weight to the leader leading characteristics. However, I would argue now that leadership is gained through practice and experience and it is powered through followers. As a school leader, I will use a mixture of leadership theories. First, I will build my school on an ethical basement and then, I will structure a vision that is shared between everyone in the school. At this point of my study, I believe that the type of leadership…

The leadership influences for me started on the first Monday morning quarters onboard the CGC Yocona. I was right out of recruit training, firing on all cylinders and ready to tow the Coast Guard line. Quarters was held on the mess deck and the young BM3 was handing out work lists for the day. I did not know who he was but I watched and listened to everyone call him by his first name. Once orders were given out to all parties he then asked if there were any questions. I was not introduced nor given a work party so I raised my hand to inquire where I was to go. I mistakenly asked him by his first name where I was to go. The morning turned from bright and casual to tense and stormy in an instant as he verbally tore into me as loud as possible. This degraded and embarrassed me which…

One of the requirements of being in the Honors Leadership Program (HLP) is that first-year students live in the HLP Living Learning Community (LLC). When I found this out, I was excited as I would be able to live and develop relationships with students who were driven and striving to reach the same goal. I also did not have worry about what dorm I would live in, and I was quite happy to have that stress taken away. Now, all I had to do was find a roommate.…

My ability to love and help others is a characteristic that has shaped many parts of my life. During my junior year of high school, I was traveling home from school one afternoon when I spotted two elderly labrador retrievers cross a major street by themselves. I promptly followed the two dogs to a nearby park. When I finally caught up with them, I realized that they were lost but that they had their tags with owners contacts. While trying to look at their tags, one of the dogs ran off. I followed that dog for over a mile before it catching up with it, while my friend that was with me stayed with the other. Once we called the owners of the two dogs we sat and waited for over an hour until they arrived. They were so happy to see that their dogs were okay, and thanked us many times over. My ability to help others in need whether they are people or animals is a trait that is special, a trait that would bring personality diversity to any college.…

This approach to leadership is quite interesting and has influenced me because in the latter part of my career in the Navy, I see this type of leadership style more and more. Many people may think of the military being as part of a big team; and they are correct in many cases, but there is a lot of individualism as well. It was not until technology and increased tracking of policies and programs that I started to notice and be a part of project management, task force, and improvement teams. This was not commonplace in probably the first half of my career. Northouse (2012) emphasized additional types; “Examples of such teams include project management teams, task forces, work units, standing committees, quality teams, and…
