1.1
Compare the characteristics associated with active support and the hotel model in relation to an individual’s support
Active support enables this, and encourages the service user to do as much as they can according to their abilities, whereas the hotel model is based around institutional experiences, where everything is done for the service user, like you would expect when you use a hotel. The hotel model is a model that is outdated, and based upon old traditions where individuals with physical and/or learning disabilities were not accepted into society the way they should be, and tended to be grouped together into institutions where everyday tasks like cooking and cleaning would be done for them. However, some people do still live by the hotel model, but this may not be out of choice. Some service users may be incapable for different reasons for not doing many things for themselves, and so there isn’t any choice by the care provider but to do these things for them.

1.2
Identify practical changes that could be made within a service setting to:
– promote an individual’s independence
Promoting independence:- is to encourage individuals to do as much as they can for themselves, support them to make informed choice with little or no assistance
– support informed choices
That individuals are empowered to consider a range of options by providing a variety of information, they own decisions, and share responsibility for the outcomes i.e. communicate using their preferred method; provide information in a format that is relevant & suitable for them e.g. Braille, Easy Read, Audio, Large Print,
– improve quality of life

When it comes to independence, many people try to strike a balance. In America, children and adults alike seek out like minded individuals to form alliances with. These friendships and relationships are based on a common philosophy or ideology and while this sameness is the reason for the bond, the individual parties struggle to retain their individual independence. This can often lead to a sociological kind of nomad-ness as people drift from group to group trying to find the best "fit" for themselves.…
