Laurel Wilt Disease
Laurel wilt is a vascular disease caused by the fungus Raffaelea lauricola that is transmitted by the invasive Ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus. The disease affects and kills members of the laurel family (Lauraceae). Avocado is the most valuable crop affected by laurel wilt disease. The weevils bore the wood of the trees and carry the fungus that is used to feed the larvae. The fungus causes the wilting of stems and leaves and dark streaking in the wood.
Disease management practices still being investigated. Research suggests that some redbay trees may be resistant to disease, and future research investigates the factors associated with resistance, to identify and develop resistant varieties. Currently, the main practice for the management
