"Last of the Mohicans"

Question: "To what extent is the film 'The Last of the Mohicans' an accurate portrayal of historical events?"

"The last of the Mohicans", the film, was based on a novel by James Fenemore Cooper. It is a fictional story set in an historical time. The movie is based on 'The French and Indian War' also known as 'The 7 Year War'. The war started in 1756 and ended in 1763. The French and English were fighting each other for the land between their two settlements and the possession of America.

At the start of the movie, it tells you that the year is 1757, the third year of the war. But in fact 1757 was the second year of the war because the war started in 1756. This means that the third year of the war would have to have been 1758.

The countries involved in the war were England and France plus the Native Americans (Huron, Ohawa and Mohawks). This was accurately portrayed in the film.

The cause of conflict between the two countries was the fact that the English started to setting up farms in French Territory and the French weren't to happy. There had been conflict before the war but this was the strew that broke the camels back.

Some Native American tribes decided to side with the countries fighting by making deals with them. The Mohawks decided to side with England but the Huron and the Ohawa tribes decided to fight with the French because the French had always been better to the Native Americans then the English had been.

The locations and their names were accurate in the film. The three forts were Fort William Henry, Fort Edward and Alburney. They were all placed inside the fought over land between the French and English settlement.

In the film there were three Military Leaders. These were General Webb (British), Colonel Munro (British) and General Montcalm (French). It is a historical fact that these three men did exist during this time.

The movie's terrain was accurate to what it was like back then. They

The French and Indian War (1754-1763) took place in a very daunting period of American history, when there was a lot of tension between the colonists and the British who lived in England. This eventually led to the American Revolution. At the time, the English, the French, and the Spanish all had control over some parts of North America. The war was mainly a struggle over which nation, France or Britain, would have control of the Ohio River Valley, although there were native groups that allied themselves with one side or the other. It began with the Battle of Fort Duquesne and was considered the first world war, or the Seven Years’ War in Europe. However, the French and Indian War itself altered the relationship between Britain and its American…

In 1689 France and England declared war. England wanted to claim the land towards the Ohio River Valley, but France had already claimed that land by La Salle in 1682. The French had established a fur trade with the Indians around that area developing friendly relations, economic alliances, and military alliances. Instead of controlling the Indians like the English, the French became friends and business partners, therefore the Indians became allies with France a lot easier than England. The Huron and the Algonquian Indian tribes were allied with the French, while the Iroquois Indians were allied with the English.…

The French had claim land expanding across along the Mississippi River to Louisiana. As the English settlement developed and prospered, their aspiration to settle in the lands past the Appalachians grew. After the F.I War, the French had lost an enormous amount of land to the English and Spanish. This is further supported by Document A, as it shows that after a span of nine years, the French had lost all of their North American territories. The sudden expanse of land made Britain into the strongest force in the North Americas.…

The French and Indian War, also called the Seven Years’ War, lasted nine years (1754-1763) and was centered around the Ohio Valley, northwest of the British Colonies. Although the official declaration of war wasn’t until 1756 small battles began to take place as American forces tried to take an important French fort called Fort Duquesne. As attempts failed and a stalemate settled over the area, Britain decided that instead of going directly to war with France, they would have a war in America, because after all, it was a war over land, power, and raw resources in America. The French and Indian War was a major historical event that brought out underlying conflicts and major differences between the Americans and British that ultimately marked…

On the foreign side, France and England had been attacking American merchant ships, forcing impressment. Impressment is forced recruitment into Britain's Royal Navy. It is much like kidnapping or enslavement. For many years, Washington stayed out of the French Revolution. In 1793 they drafted the Neutrality Proclamation of 1793. Through Washington and Adams’ presidencies, war was avoided. There were several events that caused the war; impressment, embargoes, the War Hawks of the south and west being convinced the Brits were arming and helping the Indians. Henry Clay and other young congressman used the Native American issue to really scare people and make a big push for the war they wanted.…

The French and Indian war went on from 1756 to 1763. It was also known as the Seven Years’ War, it lasted seven years. It greatly involved the Native Americans and affected the relationship that they had with the French. The British and the French were fighting to see who would take over the colonies in North America. The British won. After the British won the French and Indian war, they began taking over the colonies and started to take some rights away from the Americans. For example, the British gained a lot of property in North America as a result of winning the war and they wanted to limit property, so they restricted the colonists from moving west of the Appalachian Mountains. The British had also put many of their soldiers in America to protect their interests, and that made the colonists feel unsafe. The British also started taxing the Americans and enacting new laws because of the debt that they were left with after the war. The Americans were being pushed to the limit; it was not fair what was being done. They were being treated unfairly. These points were when the feelings of disloyalty towards the British began to arise in the American colonists.…
