Lamb to the slaughter c.e.l

The short story ‘Lamb to the slaughter’ by Roald Dahl is a very interesting story I enjoyed it very much.

Dahl’s short story opens with Mary Maloney waiting for her husband to get home. He arrives home and tells her he is leaving her. Then she kills him, cooks the weapon (leg of lamb) she goes to the grocery store and returns and calls the police. The police arrive. They question her, eat the lamb and leave

At the beginning of the story Mary is depicted as the typical loving wife. At the beginning we see her looking forward to her husband getting home from work. She takes his coat gives him whiskey and greets him with a kiss. A quote from the story to show this Darling, shall I get your slippers’ these where admirable qualities and shows her love for Patrick but it could be too much for him. Because she could be a bit clingy. Mary can also be regarded as being tense and impatient and our admiration begins to falter because she talks to much tries to be super efficient and won’t listen to Patrick.

The most obvious criticism of Mary comes from the fact that she viciously murders her husband. She could have discussed the situation with her husband instead of taking his life however, it can be argued that her actions were also admirable because she is pregnant and only thinking about the baby.’ What were the laws of murder with an unborn child?’ Mary can be further admired for her strong maternal instinct. She was concerned about how she would bring up the unborn child. She was selfless for her child not even worrying about herself.

The construction of a convincing alibi could also be thought of an admirable action because she thinks very quickly. She also carries it off very skilfully it worked very well because she wasn’t caught.

Once more, however criticism can be made regarding her action. She is very sly and dishonest. She is very cunning with what she did and how she did it.

Mary deception of the police further muddies our opinion of her. She makes them eat the lamb ‘why don’t you eat up that leg of lamb in the oven’ but her actions are wrong and frightening. She is very cunning to do such and evil thing.

Overall I criticise Mary Maloney. I think she is a very sick and evil person. She did kill him but she is pregnant so I see why she lashed out. But it was absolutely sick to make them eat the weapon. But she was only thinking about her baby so I could see why people would admire her.

On the other hand, Lamb to the Slaughter is a murder case instinctively executed by Mary Maloney, who is the wife to the deceased Patrick Maloney. First, Mary Maloney had killed her husband because he wanted to divorce. In anger Mary got a leg of lamb from the freezer and after hearing the news of wanting a divorce, Mary acted fast with disapproval ,and so” she swung the leg of lamb high and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head”(Dahl 3).This proves that Mary defeated her demons and had not wanted a divorce so she took matters into her own hands.Second after killing her husband should found a successful and creative way to hide the crime. after killing her husband she decided to cook the leg of lamb so she “... placed it in a pan and turned on the oven on high and shoved it inside.”(Dahl 4) What's my reason because Mary killed her husband and couldn't deal with the fact that she was going to jail for those acts, so she covered up the crime and successfully defeated her demon. In conclusion, Mary had successfully defeated her demons and was able to progress in…

She had a drink prepared for her husband before he walked in the door, would sit quietly until he was ready to speak, and continually tried to offer him comfort when she saw he was distressed. Yet, Patrick Maloney, her late husband, yells at her before telling her greatly upsetting news, before callously telling her not to make a scene because “It wouldn’t be very good for my job.” Any person would find this news very upsetting, and making her pain about him would drive us over the edge. Temporary insanity is a rare phenomenon, but her husband’s callous disregard and knowing what would happen to her as a divorcee caused Mary Maloney to plunge into a state of madness. She wrongly perceived herself as having no choice but to kill her husband. After hitting her husband with the murder weapon, a leg of lamb, Mary recalls that “She came out of it slowly, feeling cold and surprised, and she stood for a few minutes, looking at the body, still holding the piece of meat tightly with both hands.” This does not sound like the actions of a cold blooded murderer. It rather sounds like someone who did something not even themselves expected, as if they were detached from their body. It appears that Mary is in shock, unable to believe what she may have done, as many insane people do when told of their…

The short story, ”Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl and the film version directed by Alfred Hitchcock take place in America. The characters in this story are Mary and Patrick Maloney. In this story Mary gets very upset when she finds out that Patrick is going to leave her, so without thinking, she kills him with a leg of a lamb. At first she doesn’t realize what she did, but when she does, she calls the police and tries to convince herself that she didn’t do it. There are three significant differences between the text and the movie. The first difference is when Patrick tells Mary that he is going to leave. In the story we never find out what Patrick tells Mary that makes her so upset. I think in this change added to the story because it…

In the story, Mary Maloney uses a variety of tactics to maintain her illusion of innocence. After she kills Patrick, she goes to the grocer to create an alibi. While buying grocery, she makes a prolonged conversation in a polite and friendly manner so he remembers her. Furthermore, due to her excellent ability to change personas, she creates a persona of a victim to influence the officer’s investigation before it even starts. When the police arrive, she goes and hugs Jack Noonan which causes him to have sympathy for her. Because of her persona as a victim, the detectives are exceptionally nice to her; they start to console her rather than to investigate the murder. The detectives are extremely tired and she takes their tiredness as leverage.…

The mood changes when Patrick drinks his first glass of whisky in one go. Then pours himself another, even stronger. At first will not speak to Mary, and she soon senses that something is wrong Patrick clearly tells Mary that he is leaving her but the writer leaves it to the reader to figure it out why. I imagine Patrick is leaving her because he is bored with his life with her because she does everything like clockwork and she behaves more like a servant than a wife.…

Characterisation of the Mother through her actions, speech and thoughts have lead the audience see her as an unfaithful, careless and somewhat self-fish person. We learn that her daughter, Mary was an accident and she was unsure whether it belonged to her husband John or the affair she is having with Bruce, who she describes "witty and wonderful". The Mother does not show any signs of guilt or being ashamed for her disloyalty. In fact she was quite proud that Mary could be "bound to go on the stage, with an actress for a mother and an actor for a father", which obviously was not referring to her husband. She doesn’t seem to care about Ian's results and talk to the housemaster because she will "miss my train". Her actions and thoughts creates a sense of dislike that she is insincere and not being a caring, maternal…

‘The Speckled Band’ is a fairly long story which is filled with information. The text is stretched out into many complex sentences, this gives you time to scrutinise the harder parts of the story. The storyline was very well thought upon and contains intricate details which at times leave you mesmerised at the true beauty of Doyle’s writing. Roald Dahl, traditionally known for the serious of children’s books he once wrote, would surprise you to know that he once wrote a detective story also. ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’ is fast paced and contains many twists and turns. At times you feel lost as the story subverts from time to time. The beginning of the story is long and slow but it soon picks up pace and begins to draw you ever closer to the controversial ending. Sometimes the seriousness of detective stories make you feel lost and dare I say bored, but Roald Dahl’s comical theme soon breaks the tension and leaves you sniggering to yourself at a monumentally hilarious ending.…

Almost all who have met Mary and her husband would agree that she was very much in love with her husband. So why would she kill him because she found out he was cheating on her? The answer is she was insane. Some evidence to support this reality is when Mrs. Maloney was kissing her husband on his way inside and incredibly pleased that he was home and then he told her “I’m leaving you Mary.” She then went down to cook dinner instead of talking about the situation with her husband more like a sane person would do, she grabbed a frozen lamb chop and sneaked up on her husband and killed him. This alone shows there is definitely something wrong with her mental health.…
