First, Mary Maloney had killed her husband because he wanted to divorce. In anger Mary got a leg of lamb from the freezer and after hearing the news of wanting a divorce, Mary acted fast with disapproval ,and so” she swung the leg of lamb high and brought it down as hard as she could on the back of his head”(Dahl 3).This proves that Mary defeated her demons and had not wanted a divorce so she took matters into her own hands.Second after killing her husband should found a successful and creative way to hide the crime. after killing her husband she decided to cook the leg of lamb so she “... placed it in a pan and turned on the oven on high and shoved it inside.”(Dahl 4) What's my reason because Mary killed her husband and couldn't deal with the fact that she was going to jail for those acts, so she covered up the crime and successfully defeated her demon. To reinforce his lesson on planning out a situation, Roald Dahl uses examples of the outcomes of situations with and without rational thinking; he first begins with an example of the negative effects of rash decisions. “…Mary Maloney simply walked up behind him and without any pause…brought it down as hard as she could.” In the heat of the moment, Mary was blinded from proper judgment by her onslaught of emotions towards her husband. If Mary had stopped and thought rationally about her predicament, she most likely would not have to deal with the fact that she murdered her husband. On the other hand, Roald Dahl gives his main character a chance to redeem her previous poor decision making. “What were the laws about murderers with unborn children? Did the kill them both-mother and child?” Once Mary came to the conclusion that her baby’s life was on the line, she was not going to take a chance. She calculated her actions, and after thinking about the best solution, concocted a solution to her crisis. She cleverly creates an alibi for herself, demonstrating the positive outcomes of rational thinking. Also, Mary once again demonstrates the advantages of processing a situation before acting when she decides to rid herself of the murder weapon. “Please eat it…It’d be a favor to me if you’d eat it up. Then you can go on with your work again afterwards.” Knowing that the officers are searching for the weapon and she still has it, Mary develops an extraordinary plan to rid herself of the evidence. Her well thought out plan emphasize the positive outcomes of rational thinking by not only riding her of the lamb leg, but by also…

Mary Maloney was going to have a son, but the husband had to leave because having a family wasn't going to be good for his job as a detective. Leaving her is an act of betrayal “I know it’s a bad time to be telling you this, but there was simply wasn't any other way. Of course, I’ll give you money and see you’re looked after” (Dalh Pg.2). Betrayal should not be a necessary part of life because the husband wants to leave her and the unborn baby. He wants to leave his family just because of his job. Mary Maloney, in the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” is not guilty by the reason of insanity. This is when the crime is committed but the person who committed it couldn’t tell if it was wrong or right. During the murder, Mary doesn’t know what she is doing. “Her first instinct was not to believe any of it, to reject it all... When she walked across the room she couldn’t feel anything at all–except a slight nausea and a desire to vomit. Everything was automatic now.” In this quote, Mary is unstable. She doesn’t know what she is doing. After Patrick tells Mary he is leaving her, she goes into shock. She tries to be a good wife but she is breakable. During the murder and right after, Mary is only temporarily insane. She is going to make dinner when Patrick says, “‘For god’s sake. Don’t make supper for me. I am going out!’ at that point Mary simply walked up behind him without any pause and swung the big frozen leg of lamb high in the air and brought it down... on the back of his head... The violence of the crash, the noise, the small table overturning, helped bring her out of shock.” In this quote, Mary is at her breaking point. After Patrick says he doesn’t want her to make dinner. Mary goes into shock and, came behind him and swung the frozen led of lamb. She couldn’t tell if it was wrong or right, she just did it. After the crash of the small table, it brought Mary out of shock. After Patrick was deceased, she subsequently told herself “All right, so I’ve killed him” almost like she had done it before. Her plan in order to cover up for the murder was to cook the lamb and go to the grocery store. Then she would come home to find her husband dead and be shocked. She had come up with the plan very quickly. It was foolproof because she was aware of the consequences and how it might end up affecting her life and her unborn child's future. Her characteristic of her cleverness was shown again when she was able to manipulate police officers. For example when she says “I know Patrick would never forgive me… why don’t you eat up that lamb…”, she is just manipulating the police officers to eat and destroy the murder weapon. “Mary Maloney began to giggle,” displays how her clever murder was successful and how she was even impressed with herself. Due to these scenarios in the short story, it is evident that Mary Maloney is a clever woman, who knows how to escape with murder.…
