After Aunt Harriet runs away from Waknuk, she peacefully rides down the road cradling her dear baby Laia, as she hears a loud thump and the horses cries and glances over to where Joseph is standing holding arrows, just as Aunt Harriet starts to scream an arrow goes through the side of her chest. Aunt Harriet knew her life had come to an end for her, but not to her baby. She quickly tosses her baby to a big soft bush to her left. That was the end for Aunt Harriet, but just maybe, her baby had a chance. That same day the Schreave family, were riding down the hill with little Elias on the same day. They notice some commotion and a carriage crashing down on its side and the leader of Waknuk slipping behind the trees. Then they notice a baby in the bushes, Laia. …show more content…
Elias likes to act like Laia’s older brother even though he is only a year older, always keeping her safe and helping her out. Laia is a dangerous, risk taking girl and she will do anything to get back at Henry Singer and Joseph Strorm for killing her innocent mother that she barely knew. Every morning Laia and Elias sets out to the forest for watch. Even at their young age they have large duties. As they climb a tree they notice that there are people driving down the road, but as they climbed down Elias fell and pulled Laia down with her. Falling on the newcomers, knocking them out “Ouch!” Laia screamed loud enough for other people to hear.
“You alright Laia?” Elias asked sympathetically, Laia nodded. Suddenly, they could hear a great horse in the distance,
“let's get out of here!” Laia said and they ran off before Gordon came from riding on his horse.

After the capture of the newcomers, Elias and Laia climb another tree to overhear the conversation of Gordon speaking to this odd traveler .
