22 May 2012

1. Introduction

Based on the current economic climate, only companies which have the ability to adapt to continuous changes, shape their business strategies according to the market and take calculated risks will be able to survive. Attributes such as creativity, flexibility and competitiveness have become of the utmost importance for leading organizations.
Although the current economic situation has proved disastrous for many of the companies, there is though a prosperous segment that not only managed to survive the crisis but had the opposite tendency to increase in value, the dental services and equipment market.
As showed in the graphic below, from 2003 to 2008, the number of private dental practices has increased from 5,000 to 8,000 units, with a growth rate of 60%.

It comes to no surprise that based on the current growth tendencies the prosperous business climate has a lot to offer to distributors, because, in a simple comparison with the car manufacturing market, the demand has not decreased. Therefore, Artis Bio Tech, the most important distributor of dental implants, biomaterials and surgical instruments is one of the best examples of how businesses manage to withstand the crisis, moreover having an increase in the turnover.

2. General presentation of the company

Ohmeda’s current distribution system and sales organization is not well suited to implement Rountree’s new business strategy. The new corporate strategy calls for growth in high technology product lines and the current dealership channel is more suited to goods that require less education and information. In summary, the market trends combined with our changing corporate strategy will require Ohmeda to change the distribution channel and structure of the sales force. In the short run, this will require a transition period and an investment to reorganize Ohmeda’s sales force for long term growth. In the long run, we believe this consolidating market will be heavily specialist orientated. Due to these facts we recommend a dedicated sales force of specialists to address large accounts. The dealer network will be progressively scaled back to where their primary focus will be on the low technology markets where education is not important.…

Coloplast has been in operations in Denmark for nearly 60 years. The company specializes in producing medical devices such as disposable ostomy bags, antifungal cremes cleansers and moisturizers. For 42 years, all Coloplast operations were contained within Denmark, however 97% of its revenue was generated by exporting its products beyond its national borders. In 1999 the company changed its philosophy and began to investigate off shoring its production facilities. In 2001 the first Coloplast production facility opened its doors outside of Denmark. The expansion took place in Tatabanya Hungary. This location was chosen because of cheaper labour and land rates, as well as a more favourable tax rate. The city is located in the Western region of the country which provided better infrastructure. Coloplast had no blueprint to navigate through the expansion process, and had to learn and develop best practises by trial and error. By 2004 the management team in Tatabanya had advanced the production system to the point where it was outperforming the longer established Danish facilities.…

AMT is in the business of developing, manufacturing and marketing scientific medical instruments, needles and catheters for minimal invasive medical treatments. They have a dedicated sales force to sell their products via the medical hospital and doctor’s channel. The industry continues to experience a robust 30% sales growth currently as well in the future. AMT has experienced extraordinary sales growth as can be seen in the Income statement. To maintain their sales growth (at least around industry growth) and market share, AMT has been spending heavily on their Sales and marketing (around 48-53% of sales from 1983-1985) and R&D (9-19% of sales dollars). It seems product differentiation based on scientifically superior medical instruments is their long term strategy as well as USP. Heavy SG&A spending is responsible for their operating losses or negative earnings. To sustain their sales growth they have SG&A costs which are responsible for additional finance requirements. It remains to be seen when AMT’s R&D and Sales force will hit the economies of scale from fixed cost perspective.…
