Odysseus: Zero or Hero?

Odysseus, saves citizens, saves shipmates, is a cold blooded killer and promiscuous man. When I think of Odysseus I think of a criminal or a zero. Odysseus is a zero for three main reasons 1.He is a killer and does not protect his shipmates 2. He is not a team player and he is not a leader 3. He constantly shows he can not be trusted. “There will be killing until the score is paid” is a quote from Odysseus in book 22. Everybody knows that heroes do not kill and Odysseus is no exception. In book 22 Odysseus slaughters bunches of men because they pursued his wife Penelope. On page 960 the blue text reads Odysseus and his men are compared to falcons who show no mercy to the flocks of birds they pursue and capture. These men were killed terribly because they pursued Odysseus wife because Odysseus was gone for 20 years. When Odysseus’ men were going to go straight to Scylla Odysseus did nothing. “She ate them as they shrieked there, in her den, in the dire grapple reaching still for me”. While Odysseus’ could have warned them of Scylla Odysseus decides that their lives are not very important. Because of Odysseus’ actions all of his men died. Since the the dawn of time it has been a universal fact that to be a hero you need to be a team player. When Odysseus gets his shipmates killed it is a perfect example of Odysseus not being a team player. Odysseus is the only person survive from his expedition why because he did not properly protect his shipmates.Let me read this quote “Driven by hunger they ignore Odysseus’ warning and eat Helios’ cattle”. Odysseus’ could not properly feed his men and he could not control them. When you look at the cyclops cave situation you realize that Odysseus is not very clever or smart. One of Odysseus’ men say “ Take the cheeses, get them stowed, come back, thrown open all the pens, and make a run for it”? While doing that was clearly a better choice

First, Good leaders never ignore other teammates’ opinion and don’t make their team to be endangered. Odysseus ignored his crew’s opinion and that made them run into danger. In Book 9, line 253-259, his crew suggests to go back to their swift. However, Odysseus didn’t go back and he stayed there for polyphemous’ gift even though there is no certainty that polyphemous will give a gift. As…

Odysseus’s behavior was ironic when he deliberately concealed part of Circe’s prophecy from his men because when Odysseus and his men went through Scylla, all of the men were scared and some of the men were killed. In the Odyssey it said that: “My men all blanched against the gloom our eyes were fixed upon that yawning mouth in fear of being devoured” (Homer886) This quote showed that Odysseus’s behavior was ironic because since he did not tell his men that they were going through Scylla so they were terrified. The men just saw this huge whirlpool in the middle of the sea and were not really pleased to hear that they were going through that and not knowing the outcome. They were very scared because the outcome could result in them dying. When the Odyssey was talking about when Odysseus’ men were getting killed The Odyssey said: “Then Scylla made her strike, whisking six of my best men from the shop. It happened to glace aft at ship and oarsmen and caught sight of their arms and legs, dangling high overhead” (Homer886). This quote is showing that Scylla ate six of Odysseus’ best men while they were traveling by her. This was the aftershock of Odysseus not telling his men that they were going to see Scylla in this journey and most likely get eaten. Yet again all of the me were ate only because Odysseus did not tell his men about the ending that they could of all been dead in the end. In conclusion, Odysseus’ behavior was ironic when he deliberately concealed part of Circe’s prophecy from his men because Odysseus did not tell his men that they would travel though her and get scared and…

Odysseus has been doing this through the whole book to his crew. The first major time was when he and his crew went into the cave of the cyclops. This next quote was right before Odysseus and his crew were going to stab the cyclopes in the eye. “‘Courage- no panic, no one hang back now!’”(9.422) Even thought they knew that they had to get out of that situation but yet he wanted to seem heroic but really he almost got everyone killed. This is also showing that he is just a guy that wants to to be know for saving everyone and not known for a good leader. My next quote comes from when Odysseus asks his crew to go into the woods to find Circe’s halls. None of the men want to go into the woods because they just got done with rowing a ship for days on days. Odysseus talks them into going into the woods finally but they don't want to. “And so, numbering off my band men-at-arms into two platoons...” (10.222-23) Odysseus had no clue what was going to be on the island but he sent out two groups of men to find out who lived on the island and if they could stay there. He has no clue of who lives here if they are nice or not so really he just a whole bunch of men into war empty handed. My finally quote is when he had to be the only man to live through the sirens. So he plugged ears of his crew members and had them tie him to then mass of the boat. “...I stopped the ears of my comrades one by one.”(12.193) Odysseus could have whent around the island but Odysseus had to be the greatest man alive to hear the Sirens and still be able to tell the…

Alike to the children who are able to watch “...their father’s life dawn again”, Odysseus is given a sign that the domestic life he craves for will be bestowed upon him soon (437). The father on the brink of death symbolizes how Odysseus’ yearning to return to a domestic life as a citizen and be with his family had originally appeared to be dying and impossible to achieve due to his distance. At first, Odysseus’ life is comparable to the storm Poseidon created, chaotic and filled with perils threatening to take his life and destroy his hope. However, upon seeing “...that shore, those trees” the stability of domesticity is approaching him (441). In comparison to the storm, the land becomes Odysseus’ anchor as it stabilizes him and provides him…

When Odysseus offers Zeus a prized Lamb’s thighbones, he refuses them, and Odysseus realizes his mistake. He states that “Zeus disdained my offering, destruction for my ships he had in store and death for those who sailed them.” He wanted absolutely nothing to do with him, which told Odysseus that he would have no guidance or protection from him; they would have to take the journey on alone. It was then that Odysseus knew that the voyage home would be difficult, and that he would have to prove himself by adhering to the god’s advice. The fact that Odysseus does not have Zeus on his side is extremely important, it means that Odysseus would have to prove himself by acting with restraint, the men’s lives depended on it. When Odysseus had a chance to return home with the remaining crew, he was still inclined to disobey the gods thinking that he could fight his way out of his destiny, something for which Circe berated him, saying, “Must you have battle in your heart forever? The bloody toil of combat? ...will you not yield to the immortal gods?” Odysseus is a fighter, and believes that he is above all, which shows that he still will not “yield”, or admit he’s not equally great. This trait is the root of the issues that arise in the epic tale, and causes the gods to be filled with disdain towards him. It is also the cause of the men’s demise, because of his arrogance, he ruins his chances of…

I believe Odysseus to be a hero, because all his flaws are what make him human. He is not a god, so he will make mistakes. His intelligence saves him and his men’s lives, and he does not give up. He was a great leader and was willing to pay a price for knowledge. He recognized that knowledge really is power, and decides to learn everything he can on his journey home. He also acknowledges that sometimes lying, cheating, and stealing might sometimes be necessary. That is what makes him human. “He achieves both kleos and nostos in the end and doesn’t have to die for either”…

Homer’s Odysseus is a complicated character faced with mythic challenges as he leads his men on their journey home to Ithaca. As their leader, Odysseus makes the decisions that ultimately determine their fates. By the time he reaches the shores of Greece, Odysseus is the only one of his men to make it home. This fact alone points to flaws in his abilities to lead his men. Odysseus fails as a good leader because of three character flaws: opportunism, arrogance, and egoism.…

Odysseus is not a modern day hero because he tricked his men into thinking that he has logos. He convinced his men to be as brave as he is when they were going to fight through scylla. He does this because he knew he whould not get eaten while his men whould. as shown in this quote he gives his men ethos to get them ready “Well, I walked up and down from bow to stern, trying to put heart into them, standing over every oarsmen, saying gently, have we ever been in danger before this.” after he told them this they went to scylla and fought. Odysseus also has bravery when he stabbed the cyclops in his eye, he told him that his name is nobody to trick him. he also disguised his men as sheep so that they could get out of the cave. But one reason that is…

A big reason Odysseus would not fit this role is that he is too conceited. An example of this is when Odysseus yells back at Polyphemphus saying “’O Cyclops! Would you feast on my companions? Puny, am I, in a caveman’s hands. How do you like the beating that we gave you, you damned cannibal? Eater of guest under your roof! Zeus and the gods have paid you!”(Homer, page 768) for revenge believing has in the clear and almost gets him and his mates killed by the gruesome Cyclopes. Another incident is he decided to not tell his men his fortune that he would be the only man to return home and the rest would die, and this causes six of his men to die at the straight, and the rest to die after starving and finally deciding to murder Helios’s cattle. Also he could have saved his men by simply telling his men his fortune and giving them a chance to survive. Next he would do anything to return to his home to return back to his kingdom, even after everything that happens he stills try to return home, like his fortune, the Cyclopes, Circe’s island, the straight, and other reasons. A comparison you can make that tell a difference from him to another fictional hero is "Batman" in certain citations; an example of this is that Batman would put others ahead of his own good. And Odysseus would give up others for a silly return home that doesn't affect much.…
