ourThroughout life we experience many journeys which consist of physical, emotional and self-growth (inner) journeys. They help make us who we are and how our personalities are shaped. These journeys could impact our lives majorly or only slightly. There are many things that can affect the journeys in life we have the option to take, these could include: the environment, love and the resources available to us. ‘The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian’ and ‘Stand By Me’ clearly demonstrate these journeys and how they have made change in the lives of the characters.
A physical journey involves a movement from one place to another often in search for something. It can symbolise a choice or change in the person’s life. In ‘The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian’ Junior travels from Welpinit to Reardan to get to school. This symbolises his journey to escape from poverty and poor education. It also shows that he is chasing hope. Although Junior knows this is not an easy decision as it means abandoning his best friend and tribe. His difficult decision is shown in the illustration on page 43.

An emotional journey could be any moment in your life in which you go through several emotions during a particular event. Any relationship where you go through several emotions over a period of time is called an emotional journey. In summary, a person’s life in itself is an emotional journey.
