John Merridew: A Short Story
I sat at my desk, staring out at the city skyline through my floor to ceiling office window. The city was beautiful; the lights danced among the stars, skyscrapers seemed to blend into the night sky, and the people far underneath milled around like ants, scattered, chaotic yet so purposeful.
I sudden knock on the door interrupted my thoughts.
My secretary stated “John Merridew has finally arrived.” as she opened the door.
I heard him enter as I flipped through the file I had received this morning, regarding this man, for the thousandth time. There was just something about him, without a face, had caused me to feel on edge.
Still reviewing the material I said, “You are an hour late. I hope that you realize that I run my firm very strictly, and

My plane came in late. As you know, I was flown in from London for this interview.” I could hear a smile in his tone.
That voice, it was hauntingly familiar.
I looked up to see a tall, toned man with a devious smile plastered on his freckled face. His dark red hair stood out in shocking comparison to his pale face. He would be in all regards handsome if not for his eyes; cracked light blue eyes that seemed to say, “This man is capable of doing everything and anything to get his way, things more evil than one could possibly imagine, unapologetically.” I had nightmares about these eyes, after seeing what they were capable of firsthand. Time has not healed the wound that this man had carved into my soul.
My voice cracked as I struggled to get out the word I dreaded to say.
“Jack.” I moaned as I hit the

My chest felt tight and my vision blurred. The heart rate monitor began to beep louder and more insistently.
“Please Ralph, calm down. You’re going to hurt yourself.”
“OH, DON’T YOU PRETEND TO CARE! YOU’D JUST LOVE IT IF I GOT HURT, WOULDN’T YOU? ISN’T THAT WHAT YOU CAME TO DO? FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED ON THE ISLAND!” Hysteria had become my Mistress.
“Shut up! I am not here to hurt you. I am not here to finish anything. I didn’t even know that I was going to see you again. For God’s sake, I’m not as evil as you think I am. I did terrible things and it has taken me years to come to terms with the crimes I committed in that hell. I’m so sorry Ralph, sorrier than you will ever know, but I wish you could realize that did what I did because I was so young and afraid. The Beast had invaded my ill mind.”
I could hear Jack, but hysteria wasn’t allowing me to listen.
“LIAR, LIAR! YOU KILLED PIGGY! YOU KILLED SIMON! YOU KILLED PIGGY! YOU KILLED SIMON! YOU KILLED THEM! YOUKILLEDTHEMYOUKILLEDTHEMYOUKI-”
The monitor was screaming now. The incessant beeping drowned out my hysterics. My chest filled with shooting pain; I couldn’t breathe. My head swished and swirled. Doctors and nurses filled the room as the world began to fade in and out.

The emergency medical technicians take her blood pressure and shine lights in her eyes, calling her name. She doesn’t respond, appearing dazed and lying there motionless on the couch, her hand no longer trembling with that recognizable palsy. Those thick ubiquitous lenses of her eyes appear distant, a moment in time frozen on them. Almost as if whatever she encountered has bound the image to its surface and into the reaches of her brain.…

At one of the meetings Ralph is talking to one of the littluns about the beastie he saw the previous night. Ralph denies the beastie twice by saying “but there is no beastie.” (pg 35) Right now Ralph is being stubborn. Although the beast is not real, he feels that he needs to repeat this certain fact multiple times, just to prove that he is right. When Ralph is running away from the painted savages, he comes across the “beast” who nearly kills Simon. He stands up to it, and knocks it down. “The skull regarded Ralph like one who brows all the answers and won’t tell. A sick fear and rage swept him. Fiercely he hit out at the filthy thing in front of him that, bobbed like a toy and came back still grinning into his face, so that he lashed and cried out in loathing. Then he was licking his bruised knuckles and looking at the bare stick, while the skull lay in two pieces, it’s grin now six feet across.” Ralph has successfully beaten the beast. He showed the boys that the beast should not control you. He also shows the beast that he is not afraid of him and will never be. He stands up to the the beast that everyone on the island was scared of. By this point in the novel Ralph has matured and fought off his fear. Ralph shows good leadership qualities because he showed no fear or…

Before I could even comprehend, my aunt was convulsing, with eyes rolled back and foam forming at the mouth. Hurriedly, my mom pulled her out of her wheelchair and rolled her on her left side. When the paramedics arrived, it felt like the universe was in slow motion. Voices seemed a million miles away, like soft echoes ricocheting off ragged cave walls. I was infinitely in shock; I could not process my surroundings. Mom rode in the ambulance, while I rode in Grandma Vita’s car. This moment would be the last time I saw Aunt Dori until tomorrow. The hospital was abnormally clean. Some rooms emitted no sound, however, others squealed well into the night. I never in truth noticed patients. Windows and cemented columns at every turn. The air conditioner was blasting from all angles. The doctors came by and solemnly murmured they desired to speak with my mother in private. Their eyes said to leave. Furious, I stomped off to the visitor waiting area. I may have appeared enraged on the outside, but it was all a charade. On the inside I was panic-stricken and somber. What was wrong with Aunt Dori? Why could I not attain answers? Mom returned with a pained expression on her face as the doctors calmly strode away. I recall her breaking the news to me sighing, “Do not worry, sweetheart. Everything is going to be fine.” She relayed the information from the doctors frankly, holding nothing back.…

I want to hear your cries and gasps for air as drown you, no-one will be able to hear your screams. I don't care if you're sorry anymore, Winston. You’re always sorry, and I don't want to hear it. You should have told me all that shit back when it could have made a difference, back when I loved you so much, and I would have gladly died in your place. You took what was beautiful in me and made it into what it fucking is today. I hope you're proud, it's all your handiwork.” She grinned showing yellowed tea stained teeth, her grey beautiful eyes wider than any sane persons should be. She ran her hands which were frail and caution as if she was almost scared of herself, shaking gently as she reached for the back of my head. Her hands were not ghostly but rather, just subdued and greyish. I think that's the first time I realized how vulnerable she was and how much of a toll I had mentally taken on her. I had no clue why she was doing this, she had never threatened me before. Of course we had my troubles, I had a trouble with gambling in the past, but I stopped for…

I stopped for a moment just to observe the people in the streets. Many of them were scurrying to get somewhere, talking on the phone, listening to music, and ignoring one another as if they were the only ones here. The men were all dressed in their suits and ties and the women’s high heeled shoes could be heard striking the ground very swiftly one after the other. The enormous skyscrapers tower over me and I can no longer feel the summer sun beating down on my skin. The architecture of each building is so eye-catching and differs from one another. Some appear to be made of all glass, others are more vintage looking, and some even have striking statues attached to the buildings. The streets seem more congested than the side walks. The continuous sounds of cars honking at one another pierce through my ears, and the bright yellow taxis are so overpowering to the eyes.…

But the face has always something that will betray such hypocrites to an acute observer; especially in the most expressive features, the eyes and mouth. A look in the eyes the way in which he shapes his mouth, may betray the hidden meanness, cruelty, craftiness or selfishness that lurk behind the friendly smile and the frank look. Certainly it is that dishonesty, lust and cruelty, honesty, purity and kindness, all leave indelible marks on…
