Case Study of Elton Mayo George Elton Mayo was born on Boxing Day (December 26), 1880, in Adelaide, Australia and lived until 1949. (economist.com) Mayo was the oldest son of George Gibbs Mayo and Henrietta may. He has an extensive list of schools where he received education, starting with the Queen’s School and Collegiate School of St. Peter. Following that Mayo, attended the University of Adelaide and Universities in Edinburgh and London where he lost his interest in pursuing a career in medicine. Starting in 1903 he moved back and forth between London and Adelaide where he held jobs as a writer, English teacher, and became a partner in a printing company. Then in 1907, still not finding his calling in life he went back to school to pursue degrees in philosophy and psychology under (Sir) William Mitchell, where he would win the Robby Fletcher Prize in psychology and graduated with honors. Following his last stint of education Mayo, became foundation lecturer in mental and moral philosophy at the University of Queensland and shortly after married his wife Dorothea McConnel (Bourke adu.edu) Who was Elton Mayo? What was the Hawthorne experiment about, what was its purpose? Elton Mayo was a professor at the University Queensland, a research associate of the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, and an associate professor and professor of industrial research at the Harvard School of Business Administration. He was also the author of three books and studied researched the social behavior of employees at work. After his ground breaking research he did while at the University of Pennsylvania, where he curved a spinning mill in Philadelphia’s turnover rate from two-hundred fifty percent to six, bringing it down with the rest of the departments in the company.     Edward ‘John’ Mostyn Bowlby was born in London on February 26, 1907 and died in 1990, one of the middle children of six siblings, to upper class parents. John’s father was a surgeon to royalty, later knighted first Baronet, only saw the children on Sundays. John’s mother believed parental attention and affection would lead to dangerous spoiling of the children, as was customary of the day, and only saw the children a short period each day, preferring to leave the upbringing to a strict and methodical nanny and nursemaid. John was allegedly the nanny’s favorite; however, she left when he was about four. At about 11 years of age, John and his brother were sent off to a boarding school. After boarding school, John went to Dartmouth, Royal Naval College. At 17, John decided that the Navy was not fulfilling and went to Trinity College in Cambridge, to study medicine and psychology, where he graduated in 1928. Instead of clinical school, at 21 years of age John taught at a boarding school for maladjusted children. From this experience he decided to combine psychoanalytic and medical training. In 1933 at 22, John became medically qualified at University College Hospital and then decided to train in adult psychiatry at Maudsley Hospital. In 1936, and he went to train at the London Child Guidance Clinic and then became Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Army Medical Corps in psychiatry during WWII. After that he settled into a career as Deputy Director at the Travistock Clinic, and also, in 1950, Mental Health Consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO).…
