In Jim O’Brien The Things They Carried the book is introduced as a war story, but quickly shifts to a love story. The shift from the first war story that the author tells us to the first love story is surprising to someone who was expecting the whole book to be a collection of short stories. Usually, in a book, it is not likely that there would be a change in the narrator as well as time period chang all at once. So this is why some people believe that this novel is a love story or a war story.

Cross was hoping that Martha might read it as well as if they might eventually end up together and have a relationship.
Love in this book functions as the story of Martha and Cross and how their lives turned out for them. Cross had put his faith, and love in Martha knowing that he couldn’t put his faith in the war itself. Cross had hoped that they genesis of their relationship would start off good. This is a symbol of the love Cross had for Martha. The word Love in this novel is complicated due to how Cross hopes that it carries meaning in Martha’s letters, but he is also skeptical of the world.
I think that this novel is a love story due to the love that Cross had for Martha and the meaning and importance that it was to him. Cross thought about Martha while in the war and kept pictures of her with him in the war. A person would not keep pictures of another person if they did not love or care for them.
