Jim Heynen's 'What Happen During The Ice Storm'
Jim Heynens writer of What happen during the ice storm, shows a humans reaction during a challenging situation. The theme of this tale is kindness, a type of human nature , in the story is showing a few boys saving the pheasants, instead of pounce on a pheasant or yell bang . The human nature can be represented by many forms, and in this story is by survival and limitless kindness.

This story is an example of how a tough situation can influence a person’s decision making. For example when the author said "each expecting the other to do something. To pounce on a pheasant, or to yell bang!" It showed the boys where frightened, and not yet grown up enough to take a life. In fact,they sacrifice their own well-being to save the p heasants. By

    Isaac Cline dealt with perils that no one should have ever had to endure. Erik Larson was very good at describing what he thought and saw, but a little too much. His descriptions were too lengthy and the subject didn’t catch my attention until much later in the book. The book was written very well it excluded the too familiar he said she saids. The language flows with clarity and precision. His recount of the storm’s destruction sucks you into the dramatic effects as the storm takes over the town.     This story exemplifies a young boy’s growth in moral education, as well as, his realization that there are consequences for his actions. Wright uses the title to foreshadow the bildungsroman theme in the story. Although the story strongly exemplifies a coming-of-age narrative, it also portrays a sort of coming-of-(r)age. Dave, the main character, is exhausted with society treating him like a child. “One of these day he was going to get a gun and practice shooting, then they couldn’t talk to him as though he were a little boy.”(1062) He believes that by purchasing a gun than he will be respected as a man. “Could kill a man with a gun like this. Kill anybody, black or white. And if I were holding his gun in his hand nobody could run over him; they would have to respect him.” (1065) After purchasing the gun, he hides it from his mother and lies to her about the gun’s whereabouts. This exemplifies only a fraction of his childish behavior. Dave then carries the gun with him as he goes to work for Mr. Hawkins in the field. While playing with the dangerous weapon, he fires the gun and it wounds one of Mr. Hawkins’s mules. When Mr. Hawkins learns about what Dave has done, he approaches Dave with an agreement on how Dave may repay him for killing his mule.
