Comparing The Drummer Boy Of Shiloh And An Episode Of War
A Comparison of Two Stories

As this essay is written, there will be a comparison and contrasting between the short stories “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh,” and “An Episode of War.” The comparison will be based on the mood, tone, style, character, setting, and conflict. The “Drummer Boy of Shiloh” is about a boy who is afraid of marching in the war the next day. He is startled over every move because he does not want to be killed. The drummer boy is inspired by Ulysses S. Grant and comes to realize that he is important and needed. The mood of the story is before a battle during the Civil War. The boy is frightened and the conflict of the story is the struggle the boy has in overcoming his fear of death to realize his purpose and importance.

There is ten slaves and each of them wrote their own story about what they had to face each and everyday. For example, one of the slaves is Frederick Douglass.     In the April night, hours before the most bloody event starts in 1862, was a boy who feared the upcoming battle. The narrator is in third person. The author’s purpose was to inform the readers about how the drummer boys would feel before the fight, since they do not carry any protection for themselves. The story took place at Shiloh, Tennessee, on the eve of the Civil War battle. Joby, who is a drummer boy, feared the battle and could not sleep. The general notices him and tries to comfort Joby.
