This is an elegantly written memoir about the life of Greg Williams and his younger brother Mike. The boys live in Virginia with their parents who ran a rowdy bar for military people associated with the bases in Norfolk. Their father was a temperamental, brilliant, exceedingly charming, devious alcoholic. When his fathers marriage and business came apart in Virginia, Greg was about 8 years old, and Mike a bit younger. Their father moved them to Muncie, Indiana and left them with some of his relatives, who had no income and no ability to care for them. The striking aspect of this story is that during this move to Muncie, the boys learned from their father that he was a black man and that in Muncie, they, too, would be black.…
She was able to turn the toxic family stress to tolerable family stress. She was able to develop resilient coping mechanisms without the help of a trusted adult and without having PYD. Murray was able to grow and thrive because of the family stressors that occurred in her youth. Unlike several other youth across the country Murray had little to no support, but was able to be resilient against all odds and overcome it all. Youth across the country are struggling with adverse childhood experiences and they are starting to get more support in school and the start of PYD. These children will hopefully start developing more resilience toward their family stressors and overcome it all, like Murray did, to become successful member of society. Resilience is something several youth can develop overtime or may be born with, but several youth that have theses ACEs are unable to be as resilient as the author, Liz Murray, of the book Breaking Night…
What affects the successfulness of a person and how does that account for people around them? There are two different ideas that could determine this being one’s intrinsic interactions with their genetic make up and who they are personally, nature, and one’s extrinsic interactions with their environments and experiences with people around them, nurture. The Other Wes Moore provides multiple outlooks on these interactions and how they affect the author Wes Moore as well as his counterpart sharing the same name. One can read the book and determine the most key factor to one or both character’s success. Similar factors that can play in the division of intrinsic and extrinsic…
Why is environment such a factor in today’s society? Many people are influenced by their environments and these environments shape the why people act. The environment also changes people's attitudes and behaviors psychologically. Both Malcolm Gladwell and Martha both express this concept in their writings. Malcolm Gladwell, author of Power of Context: Bernie Goetz and the Rise and Fall of New York City Crime, talks about how concepts shape the way in which epidemics are performed through an individual’s involvement with his or her environment. Gladwell expresses these many concepts through citing several examples that show how one’s environment can change the way an individual acts and can change their perspective on certain things. Martha…

In the 1988 movie Young Guns we will analyze William H. Bonney, better known as Billy the Kid (Emilio Estevez) as the outlaw hero, and Patrick Floyd Garrett (Patrick Wayne) as the official hero. This movie was closely based on real life events of the Lincoln County war of 1877-1878, but because the real life events weren’t nearly as controversial and exciting, the movie was minimally changed in various ways to make it more appealing to audiences.…

Understanding Jackson’s living environment is essential to understanding his developmental niches and needs. Super and Harkness’s (in Gardiner & Kosmitzki, 2010) developmental niche model asserts that the human developmental process is influenced by the individual’s unique environment, which shaped through integration and interaction among the person’s physical and social settings, culture, and caretakers. Therefore, having discussions about his family’s ethnocultural, reginal, educational, and socioeconomic background will be essential. Through such reflection on his environment, we will be able to get a sense of his individual as well as his family’s values, which is most likely a source of conflict among them.…
Depression is a common mental health disorder, according to the Centers for Disease Control (2011) depression affects 1 in 10 Americans in the U.S. alone. Depression does not know race, ethnicity, age or gender. “The cognitive perspective on the cause of depression believes that depression can be caused by faulty thinking, low-self-esteem, a negative outlook on life, or influenced on ones gender, race, socioeconomic status, levels of social support, and stress or other environmental events” (Capella University, 2013). Cognitive relates to conscious intellectual activity such as thinking, reasoning, and remembering (Merriam-Webster, Incorporated, 2013). Early life trauma, stress and how it affects the genes and the environment all fall under the umbrella of the cognitive perspective. They can all play a role on the cause of depression. This paper will discuss how early life trauma can predict depression as well as effect genes that cause depression, and will also discuss how a neighborhood can influence depression.…
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the youngest man to be elected as president at the age of 43 and was also the first Roman Catholic president (JFK Library & Museum, 2018). He was born in Massachusetts in the Spring of 1917 and was a very sick child. His grandparents were immigrants from Ireland who were politicians in Boston (JFK Library & Museum, 2018). He grew up with his 8 siblings and a very supportive family, including his father. Kennedy was in college when WWII started and in 1940, after he graduated from Harvard, he and his brother joined the Navy (JFK Library & Museum, 2018). He re-injured his back in the war and he would later earn the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. After some convincing from his father, Kennedy ran for the eleventh congressional…
Years have passed since the Civil War, and this town has deteriorated. A life of a farmer out west can do some justice since struggling to make ends meet are all that seems to be happening. As more neighbors leave and businesses shut down, the temptation of leaving also is growing stronger. Raising a family and living a long life is most important to this life that I have. For me, moving out west to be a farmer is the likely way to go.…

The physical and biological developments are influenced by environmental causes. The concept of genes as a unit of heredity was founded around 1953 according to Watson and Crick, when they identified their biochemical nature. This goes to show how as human beings, to urgency is rippled by the curiosity of what makes up a person and how each event in their lives contributes to their growth and development throughout their lifespan. The theorist I choose to discuss is a very well known for his belief of personality developing in a series of stages. The well-known theorist Erick Erickson had created a psychosocial model of development that life is a series of continuous challenges and lessons that allows us as individuals to grow and mature.…
