J. Cole's Music Style
Back in August, I attended a J. Cole concert at the PNC Music Pavilion in Charlotte, North Carolina. During the concert, he performed tracks from his latest album 2014 Forest Hills, as well as a few throwbacks. In addition, the guests artists, Big Sean, YG, and Jeremih, also performed a few of their songs. J. Cole’s musical style is Rap and R&B. Most of his songs lie underneath the Rap category, especially since he is known as a rapper. Songs, such as “Lights Please” from his mixtape The Warm Up (20 08) and “Lost Ones” from his album Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011) show his rapping abilities. However, his song that hit number 27 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart “Crooked Smile,” which he performed at the concert, played on numerous R&B radio stations. On his new album 2014 Forest Hills Drive, all of his songs contained at least one sample. Instead of incorporation old-school samples, which artists are known to do, J. Cole uses samples from current songs. One example from his song “G.O.M.D.,” another song performed, included samples form Branford …show more content…
Cole’s audience represents the hip-hop culture of today, his style of dress also represented the hip-hop culture. Dressed in a black t-shirt, black shorts, and red/black/white Nike’s on, he modeled the same urban style as majority of the audience did. I believe that artists should connect with their audience on a level beyond their lyrics. With J. Cole, he wanted to portray that the hip-hop culture is just as important to him as it is for us. In several of his songs, he mentions that flashy material objects do not faze him anymore. From his appearance at the concert, he practiced what he has been preaching through his music and interviews. In addition, his outfit did not take away from his performance, which can happen to an artist who tries to impress their audience. J. Cole knew that people came to see him perform because of his music, not because of the money he makes or how many chains he

Kid Cudi is an undeniably popular rapper. His venue for September 21 was DTE Energy Music Theatre. When walking in, the haze of cigarette and marijuana smoke acted like a wall that separated us from the outside world.…

IT swings from hip-hop to punk to reggae to piano pop to dubstep and everything that could possibly in-between. When Joseph writes a song he tends to not worry about what kind of genre he is being seen as, he just worries about what the meaning of the songs and how people will think and relate to them. He would rather worry about what his fans believe and think of him than what genre he can be seen as. But at the same time he sometimes wonder how he got here. In a review on the St. Louis Post Dispatch he says “‘This is crazy,’ he says.…

After throwing the sunglasses he was wearing into the crowd, he sang numerous songs from his new album “All-American” such as “No Faith in Brooklyn” and “Top of the World.” He also performed my personal favorite, “Not a Robot” which he added a twist involving the live band. On top of all of his own songs he sang, he played a couple of other artists’ songs and added his own vibe to them. Miley Cyrus’s “Party in the USA” and The Beastie Boys “Fight For Your Right to Party”…

Record labels began dictating to the artist what was to be considered Hip-Hop. Artists like Soulja Boy Tell’em, Drake, and Lil’ Wayne are at the forefront of the Hip-Hop of today. The majority of the content in their music reflects the voice of the younger Hip-Hop generation. Songs like Lollipop, Get Money, and No Hands only talk about money and sex. The overall criticism has been the lack of diversity in the music. Crank that Soulja Boy was a big hit for Soulja Boy Tell’em but to Hip-Hop purists, the song lacked creativity and lyrical content. Another difference between the eras would be in radio play. Laffy Taffy, by D4L, was another song that was a big hit commercially that several people use as an example for the lack of creative skill and musical integrity. Twenty years ago, you would turn on the radio and hear different records with a variation of styles and song content. Today, if you on the radio, you will hear what many would consider the same type of rap record being made by different artists. The reason behind the lack of creativity is believed to be because artists and record labels are more concerned about record sales and…

As an avid listener and creator of hip hop music, I have noticed a growing trend in the bay area: rap about what brands you wear. Whether it be Nike, Vans, Bape, or Dickies, the message seems clear: you are what you wear. Even the term "bling, bling" is so deeply associated with hip-hop that you can't say it without an image of a big, gaudy necklace popping into your head. And immediately after that, you think, "that's something a rapper would wear." It's no secret why. The hip-hop culture has been portraying a certain image since it's birth in the late 1970's and has been exploited by big name companies since then.…

Rap is most closely associated with the hip-hop musical genre, which often includes sampling, vinyl scratching, rapping, a distinctive beat, a deconstructionist aesthetic, and an urban sensibility. Rap can be included in any genre, however, it has been featured in rock, heavy metal and country, among others. However, the hip hop genre is not exclusively associated with rapping. The music of singers such as Fifth Harmony, Mary J. Blige, and Frank Ocean is generally considered in the realm of hip hop, but not always including rapping, and rappers such as Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean have occasionally released hip hop songs that sung, not…
