Investigatory Project (Mosquito Repellent)
I. Abstract

Marketed mosquito repellents today use harmful chemicals to mankind and to the environment. As we all know today, the environment is now in great danger because of our carelessness. We don’t want to cause too much failure to our environment because of these deadly chemicals that are used. Based on my research mint leaves, calamansi extract and chili are useful to make mosquito repellents by not adding harmful and deadly chemicals that caused the environment to weaken. As a concerned individual of our community, I widened my knowledge about this and confirm if it can be used for the public.

II. Statement of Goals and Objectives

1. To be able to test the efficacy of mint, calamansi and chili as a repellent. 2. To be able to compare the use of the mint, calamansi and chili repellent to not using any repellent at all. 3. To be able to know the repellent’s value to the environment.

III. Methodology A. Materials 1. Mint leaves 2. Calamansi extract 3. Rubbing alcohol 4. Chili 5. Spray bottle 6. Strainer 7. 1cup of water 8. Small pot B. Procedures First, prepare all the materials on the working table. Then, place 1 cup of water into the pot and boil the mint leaves along with the calamansi extract. Allow it to sit overnight. After that, strain the fluid and pour a small amount of alcohol o the mixture. Next, cut the chili into smaller pieces and add it to the mixture. Finally, pour the liquid into a spray bottle.

IV. Results and Discussion A. Findings SET UP | EFFICIENCY | PRICE | VALUE TO THE ENVIRONMENT | NO. OF DAYS TO MAKE THE REPELLENTS | Commercial Mosquito Repellent | More efficient | High Priced | Destructive | Months | Repellent Using Mint Leaves, Calamansi Extract and Chili | Efficient | Low Priced | Helpful | 2-3 Days |

B. Analysis of Data
From the given data above, the repellent using mint leaves, calamansi extract and chili is efficient, low priced,

sites were of similar surface area. Both mosquito bites and landings were counted as events. Measures were taken to ensure that events were not counted twice. Results: A total of 74 events occurred. The event distribution was as follows: placebo—40 events; special mixture—28 events; Avon Skin So Soft—6 events; DEET—0 events. Conclusions: When tested against a placebo, both DEET ( P .05); ASSS: 4, 2 (P > .05); DEET: 0, 0 (P > .05). Comparing each repellent against the placebo, it was found that both DEET and ASSS (40 vs 0, P < .0001; 40 vs 6, P = .0001) provided significantly better protection than placebo, but that Spec did not (40 vs 28, P = .30) ( Figure ). The use of DEET, ASSS, and Spec resulted in a 100%, 85%, and 30%…

These chemicals are now universally used on almost every farm and in almost every home across this country. They are “nonselective chemicals that have the power to kill every insect, the 'good ' and the 'bad, ' to still the song of birds and the leaping of fish in the streams, to coat the leaves with a deadly film, and to linger on in the soil.” Sadly enough, the destination of these insecticides are usually only a few annoying bugs among the thousands that exist (Carson par. 7).…

Given the recent surge of the West Nile virus spread by infected mosquitoes, it is interesting to explore the value of garlic as one more method for avoiding mosquito bites. A number of studies have shown that the oil fraction of garlic destroys certain species of mosquito larvae. Garlic sprays (made primarily with garlic extract) are available on the market for use on plants as an alternative botanical pesticide to chemical pesticides. The sulfurs contained within the garlic extract have been shown to be effective against a wide range of insects, including mosquitoes, and the lingering odor can deter mosquitoes from the area for weeks.…
