Introductory Speech: Who Am I?
Who am I? I’m Kaley Miller. I’m an 18 year old small town girl from Iowa who spent a lot of nights and weekends on my grandpa’s farm.
I am currently a freshman at Iowa Western, working towards becoming a nurse. I live in the Suites here on campus.
I was born and raised in Atlantic, Iowa. It’s a town of about 7,000 people 45 minutes from here. I grew up in a house with my mom Karen, my dad Dave, and my brother Darren. I have twin nephews, Landon and Logan, and a niece, Mackenzie. I was raised around a Catholic faith. I went to church every Sunday and on Wednesday nights I was at youth group at the church.
There are two reasons I want to go into nursing. The first reason is that I love helping other people and taking care of other people. Being a nurse requires you to help and take care of others every day. The second reason is because I was inspired by a nurse when I was 13. My grandpa had a heart attack in 2008. I spent a lot of time by his bed while he recovered from the double bi-pass surgery he needed. He had four or five different nurses, but there was one nurse, Jessica, and she made me want to do what she did. She always cared for grandpa with a smile and a gentle touch. She made it her priority to make sure that my grandpa was comfortable during his stay at the hospital. Seeing her care for my grandpa in the gentle way she did made me want to become a nurse and take care of patients the same way she took care of him. I want to take my nursing career one of two ways. The first is to work as a trauma nurse in ER’s working with patients who need immediate help. The second path is to work as a pediatric nurse in a children’s hospital.
When I have free time you can usually find me riding my bike. I have enjoyed bike riding since I started when I was five. When the weather allows I ride three to five miles a day. I have been on three RAGBRAI’s with the team, Team Reckless.
I also enjoy spending time camping. I was raised in a family that spent summers

My name is Kellee Layne Benjamin, and I will be twenty-three years old on February 4th, 2010. I was born and raised as a mid-western in Columbus, Ohio. I grew up with a large family of all sisters, half sisters, step sisters and one brother totaling eleven children. I was one of the younger, but considered to be the middle because of the age ranges between all of us. I grew up with seven siblings including myself, and the other four siblings were grown and had kids already. I lived in a small suburb of Columbus called Westerville. Westerville is a place where everyone knows everyone, even though they had four major high schools within this small town. Westerville is a very friendly place, where not a lot of crimes were committed. Westerville was “dry” my whole life growing up, but has recently changed so that they sell alcohol in certain markets around town.…

I was born in Cherry Point, N.C. to Vonda and John Barton. My parents were in their early twenty’s when I came along, my father in the Navy and my mom staying home to tend to me. When I was little and still living on base in North Carolina, I had no idea how poor we were. It never took much to make my eyes light up and my heart fill with joy. I was content riding my bike and playing with the local kids; I don’t really recall life outside of the navy base. I was happy just being there.…

Nurses share the joys, pains, and triumphs of their patients. Everyday nurses show-up for duty, receive their patients, and without hesitation begin to become a valued member of an extended family. I initially went to school with the goal of becoming a medical doctor. At the time, I believed becoming a doctor was the only way I could ultimately give back to my community through my passion for science. The decision to pursue the field of advanced nursing, developed after sharing my concerns about healthcare in the Mississippi Delta with my local family nurse practitioner.…

Although I have lived in Ohio for the past ten years and have been molded by the experiences I have had in the small town of Mount Vernon, I can still fondly remember everything about where I was born and raised. I was born on May 29th, 1998 in the small town of Irving, Texas. Growing up in Texas gave me a concept of how big this world truly is, with the seemingly endless drives to visit family members across state or the incomprehensible size of the Dallas skyline. Visiting my aunts in Texas and living with my grandmother during the first months of my living in Ohio taught me valuable life lessons and morals that I carry with me to this day.…

Pursuing a career in the nursing field was the first change that I decided to make when I held my sister's hand as she gave birth to my three year old nephew. I was inspired by the care that was provided to my sister and my newborn nephew by various types of nurses before, during, and after birth. Since then, my awareness for the well-being of others increased while learning more about nurses and what they do. My first experience volunteering at Texas Children's Hospital has also encouraged me even more to become a nurse when I encountered my first four year old cardiac patient. I was prepped by his nurse in how to safely interact with the patient while she was helping me into my protective gown and gloves. The real inspiration was actually meeting the patient and lessening his anxiety of being in a hospital through one on one contact.…

Becoming a Registered Nurse has been something that I want to become in the future, since I was twelve years old. Therefore since that time I want to make a difference on the people who have to be hospitalized, helping them to recover. Although I would like to specialize with infants and children because they have a lower immune system and those are the most fundamental years of their lives.…

Nursing is a career not just a job, nursing is treating people as a disease, but as a unique individual who has his/her own values, beliefs, needs, and also treat the family with respect, compassion, patience, and show that we care. I chose nursing because I have always liked helping people. Ever since I was a little girl I liked helping and I would tell my dad that if he was ever sick I would take care of him so he could get better. At first I wanted to be a doctor, a pediatrician to be exact, but I chose nursing because, nurses have more contact with patients and nursing school is shorter than medical school. I know I made the right choice because as I have been doing clinicals, I have been falling more and more in love with what nurses do, but throughout the process I have also seen what kind of nurse I do not want to be. During clinicals there was an agency nurse a patient did…

My name is Hannah Atakorah. I am a currently enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner program at Columbus State University. I was born and raised in Accra, Ghana, where there are not many hospitals or nurses to provide the much needed medical care for sick people. Education has always been an essential aspect of my life, but growing up in a single home in Africa did not make it easy. I was exposed to the medical field at an early age because I was fortunate enough to participate in a clinical volunteering program held in the city where I lived in Ghana which gave me a life changing experience. During that period of time, I was able to recognize how nurses are the most important people in the health care field. The sacrifices they make to give an individual top quality care are what make nurses phenomenal people.…

The few activites i liked to do and still do now is play soccer, go bowling, read, and going for bike rides. As a little kid and teenager, my cousins and I use to do a bowling day which was very intense since we are all competitive. I never and still don`t ever win because I suck at bowling but it's always a fun day seeing some of my cousins for some friendly composition and to see who will hold bragging rights. Also, when i was a kid my mom and I use to go for bike rides on the trail into erin to get ice cream from baileys ice cream shop.
