    African American Culture

The impact of West Indian slavery on the cultural landscape of the Caribbean cannot be under estimated or taken for granted. In the entire discourse on West Indian slavery, it is often taken for granted that the discussion centers solely on enslaved Africans. However, slavery brought to the region not only African but Europeans (Spaniards, French and British) and consequent to its abolition, there was the advent of the east Indians. We see the impact of their influence in the names of places; the foods we eat; our music and dance; our arts and craft, gender and sexuality. As these and other anecdotal evidences are examined and the academic contributions of others are analysed, Caribbean culture will be clearly defined and its origin established. Slavery and its attending impact upon Caribbean culture have been both positive and negative as remnants of the social/class system of the “plantocracy” linger and take deeper root in the Caribbean community, in general and the Jamaican landscape, in particular.…

Most computer users are familiar with 3-D games. Back in the 90s, computer enthusiasts were stunned by the game Castle Wolfenstein 3D, which took place in a maze-like castle. It may have been constructed from blocky tiles, but the castle existed in three dimensions -- you could move forward and backward, or hold down the appropriate key and see your viewpoint spin through 360 degrees. Back then, it was revolutionary and quite amazing. Nowadays, gamers enjoy ever more complicated graphics -- smooth, three-dimensional environments complete with realistic lighting and complex simulations of real-life physics grace our screens.…

    Essay on the Balangay

    • 882 Words
    • 3 Pages

“In the beginning there was no Philippines, but there was Butuan.” This quote has been repeatedly taught, instilled to the minds of every Butuanon- a bedtime story of a mother to her child, a history lesson of a teacher to her students, and an epic, if not a childhood memory of a grandparent to his or her grandchildren. From generation to generation, stories about the Balangay have been passed on- a large boat, an excavated national treasure. Yet now do we ask ourselves- do we really know the truth about this relic? This historic landmark, pride and past of our city?…
