ABSTRACT
One of the most exciting applications of near field communication is the wireless network system. This paper focuses on how to use this technique to solve a huge menace in our country and that is traffic management. Wireless sensor networks will be set up in the vehicles on board communication unit in order to collect real time data on traffic and road conditions, traffic control, and real-time traffic re-routing by intelligent traffic management systems. In this paper unique features and challenges that distinguish the wireless sensor system from other traffic management systems are also discussed. One more important application discussed is the use of this system for speed control in school zones to ensure better safety for young kids!!!!

INTRODUCTION
From a few years to this part, the proliferation of equipments in roads to monitoring traffic in real time has been evident. The most common problems that we can find in roads nowadays are huge; there are fearsome traffic congestions, which make lost a lot of time, money, health and environmental quality every day. All these things have influence on the population and on the planet. Wireless sensor networks are created by vehicles equipped with short and medium range wireless communication technology. Communication is possible between vehicles within each other's radio range, and with fixed gateways along the road.     The growing number of work zones on US roadways demandsthe need for a traffic information system to warn the drivers of timely updates on travel time and congestion lengths. Dedicated short range communication (DSRC) is considered a key enabling wireless communication technology to realize such automated traffic information systems. We have previously developed a work zone information system using DSRC based V2I communication in conjunction with V2V communication. Our previously developedsystem,uses a roadside DSRC unit which acts as central control to facilitate the acquisition and dissemination of work zone travel parameters e.g., travel time (TT) and starting location of congestion (SLoC). However, the successful operation of this system depends upon reliable functionality of the roadside DSRC unit working as the central control. To improve system reliability and ease of deployment, we now propose to develop a work zone travel information system using V2V communication only, without needing any DSRC based roadside unit. In the proposed system, acquisition of TT and SLoC will be performed strictly using only DSRC based V2V communication. Furthermore, the dissemination of the acquired parameters will also be done using DSRC based V2V communication to both DSRC equipped vehicles and DSRC equipped PCMSs which are strategically placed alongside the road. DSRC equipped PCMSs will be able to receive these parameters from nearby DSRC equipped vehicles on the road via DSRC based V2V communication, and display them for the drivers of those vehicles lacking DSRC capability.Additionally, a rigorous analysis will be performed to investigate the minimum DSRC market penetration rate needed for successful functionality of the proposed system with respect to both acquisition and dissemination of TT and…

    Tolling on roads and highways today is done mostly on a manual basis i.e. vehicles stop at a check gate and the toll is collected manually by authorized personnel. This poses a lot of problems such as traffic congestion, inefficient use of human resources, vast amount fuel and time wastage apart from, of course seeming very primitive in today’s world of automation. There are already methods in practice that attempt to automate the whole process. Systems that use installed video cameras that scan the license plates of the vehicles to identify the vehicles and initiate the tolling process are a viable solution but with their own problems in execution – the most important being the logistical diversity in the nature of vehicles which makes a universal protocol impossible. In this context, RFID puts forward a very efficient solution to the automation problem in the case of electronic toll collection.
