INTEGRITY ISSUES IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE FOR PROBATION OFFICER

CCJ 1910-4 CAREER CHOICES IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE -4 EVEREST UNIVERSITY ONLINE NANCY COCHRAN 03/01/2013 PROFESSOR: SHANNON ANGELIDIS

• A CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROFESSIONAL MUST MAINTAIN HIS OR HER INTEGRITY BY REMAING A CREDIBLE AT ALL TIMES. RESEARCH INTEGRITY ISSUES IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROFESSION OF YOUR CHOICE AND DISCUSS THREE ISSUES THAT COULD COMPROMISE ONE’S CREDIBILITY AND HOW TO AVOID SUCH PROFESSIONAL PITFALLS

When becoming a Probation Officer there are requirements of guide lines that must be followed in order to remain with great integrity and honesty. These requirements are as followed;
1) Purpose (conducting professional and ethical standards and perform their duties with diligence and honesty.
2) Policy ( partnership developed with the community, respect and confidence in our ability to protect the public, and supervise offenders at a level of security commensurate with the danger they represent.
3) Scope (conducting one self on or off duty) which this policy is organized into eight principles.

The three issues that I feel could compromise one’s credibility are; 1) not following the law of conduct on or off duty, 2) over achieving their power that they are authorized to use and 3) not being courteous and respecting the offenders. In order to keep these issues from becoming a pitfall into a probation officers profession is when he or she is off duty they need to keep their personal life personal because they are entitled to a personal life. It is how they conduct themselves when in the public. Example: Sally June is invited to a house party at Cheryl’s house once Sally arrive there she know what her profession is and the people that are going to be there is the public.

    The first function of the probation or parole work is the presentence investigation. This investigation delves into all aspects of the offender’s background. The information is gathered to provide a sentencing decision. The legal information that is provided in the report includes any juvenile or adult record that the offender has and would include probation history if any. The official version of the offense that has been committed is included and any plea bargain information. If there are any pending cases against the offender is also included. The other information that is included in the presentence investigation is the probation officers recommendations, whether the offender has any gang affiliations, any background or ties to the community. The offender’s substance abuse history, physical and mental health history, financial and employment circumstances, and education history are covered. And lastly, the victim’s impact statement is included along with any marital or military history. Then the probation/parole officer evaluates and summarizes all this information. There tends to be more extralegal information contained in…

    Probation is a sanction that a court orders to allow an individual who commits a crime to stay in the community without serving his jail term. However, an individual is not totally free during probation as he remains under the supervision of a probation officer (Prince William County, 2014). There are restrictions that the probationer must observe, and it is the duty of the probation officer to supervise the probationer so that he adheres to the restrictions. There are intricacies of probation, and if the probationer violates the restrictions, the probation officer reports him to the court for the appropriate action. Some of the restrictions that the probationer observes include restriction from handling weapons, abusing drugs or alcohol, and reporting to the probation officer, among other rules. If the probationer fails to adhere to the restrictions, it is the duty of the probation officer to report to the judge. The judge punishes the probationer by putting sanctions such as a jail-term, community service, restitution, and fines on the probationer (Prince William County, 2014).…

    Although probation officers supervise the probationers, that’s not all they do. There are many things that probation officers are in charge of that most people wouldn’t think of, such as, the Probation Office conducts pre-sentence investigations, parole and probation violation investigations and reports for the Court. The office supervises parolees, probationers and mandatory releases and refers clients to community agencies. (Wise, 2003)…

    Probation officers serve two separate and often conflicting roles; law enforcement and social worker. For instance, if an offender has a positive drug test, the law enforcement side wants immediate justice but the social worker half insists on referring to drug counseling. There are usually no concrete rules (other than committing a new felony) on when to request a revocation of probation. Administering assessments help in the role to supervise an offender and what type of referrals to make, but…

    Probation or parole officers abound as the work I would like to pursue in the criminal justice department. This job is characterized by a follow up or supervision of offenders who have completed their jail term. Thus, the supervision takes the form of making follow ups regarding how a released offender leads their lives. According to research, such offenders are expected to lead a drug and crime free life (Crighton & Towl, 2008). They are expected to report on several occasions in the probation officer’s office, which is located at the County or State buildings. Besides, the offenders are expected to adhere to other specified requirements. The job entails visiting homes and neighborhoods of released offenders and getting…

    A person that needs to be in an intensive probation program needs to have a high probability of committing another crime. These criminals need to be monitored, not only for their safety, but also for the community’s safety. Keeping a close eye on these criminals will greatly reduce their chances of committing another crim. Also, in order to be a good candidate for an intensive probation program, I think the criminal needs to show that they are ready to make change in their life. This is important, because if they are not ready to change their life they are not worth the effort, to put it frankly. Nothing will change a person except that person, so if they are not willing to put in the work for themselves, probation officers should not either.…
