Resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and Election of Pope Francis The resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis are getting to be a pretty big deal around the world. Pope Benedict XVI was born under the name Joseph Ratzinger on April 16, 1927 in Marktl am Inn, Bavaria Germany. He grew up under war and reparation from World War I. He was briefly a member of the Hitler Youth in his early teenage years. He turned to theology studies after the war. His father was a policeman and his mother was a cook before she was married. Ratzinger threw himself into the Catholic Church as a defense against the Nazi regime. “A citadel of truth and righteousness against the realm of atheism and deceit” he wrote. (Bio True Story) Ratzinger entered preparatory seminary in 1939. In 1943 he was drafted into the anti-aircraft corps. He deserted in the later part of April 1945 and was captured by American soldiers and held as a prisoner of war for a short time. He was ordained a priest in 1951. Ratzinger became a professor of Freising College in 1958 teaching Dogma and Fundamental Theology. Ratzinger was elevated to the Papacy on April 19, 2005 after the death of Pope John Paul II and celebrated his Papal Inauguration Mass five days later. In February 2013 at age 85 Pope Benedict XVI announced that he would be resigning on February 28 2013 becoming the first Pope in centuries to resign. Via twitter Pope Benedict XVI sent this message “thank you for your love and support. May you always experience the joy that comes from putting Christ at the center of your lives.” (Christianity Today) On March 13, 2013 a new Pope was announced and his name is Pope Francis he is the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Francis was born on December 17, 1936 exactly twenty seven years from the day I was born. He was born with the name Mario Bergoglio and is the first Pope from America.
