Individuality In 'Masculinity'

Individuality is every person’s uniqueness. Most of the person’s individuality is learned and that can include beliefs, personality, ideas and other factors that can come into play when creating a person. When babies are born they aren’t born with personalities. They are just tiny humans about to start a journey that will eventually mold them into what they are meant to be. Going through that journey will teach them different ways of life and they can pick and choose from the environment, the individuals, the ideas, the culture that best fits who they want to become. The time frame that they live in can also be a factor that shapes the person’s personality. not everything that we do in the 21st century was acceptable in another century.

For example, back in the day’s where women were seen as the person who would take care of the home and the kids, leaving the men to do the work only. In Greer’s work “Masculinity” she proclaims that women are being mistreated and even at a young age girls are treated different from boys. She goes about saying how mothers pay closer attention to their young boys (Greer 5). Giving them love and attention, the boy grows up with some positive self-esteem. Even if the boy is the ugly duckling, he would still think he is the most handsome thing out there because his mother gave him the unconditional love the young girl probably wouldn’t receive. In this situation the girl would learn that the man has inferior power in a sense and that she is less than a man. However, some believes can change over time. Now in the time that we live in we see that women are being treated with more equality. That change impacts the individuality of many women. They are able to start a business, create their own personal ideas and projects with the freedom that is now
Growing through the journey of life and developing one’s unique personality can only come from the person’s own self growth. In order to find yourself you must look within yourself and see what you really are about. Ralph Waldo Emerson expressed in his writing, “Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind” (pg. 3). Knowing about it and acknowledging the subject isn’t the same as actual individual experience. Knowing it first hand from your own perspective, makes you believe in the subject more than you would if it were just to be a general opinion from another voice. In other cases, one must push oneself to actually experience and know what there is to learn. It can be really simple for some but it can be a struggle for others because not everyone has the capability to do so, depending on their
