In last class ADMN 1206 DR Fabiano Lect
In last class ADMN 1206 DR Fabiano Lectured topic about critical thinking and reading with purpose. He taught us why reading is important? How to read and get the main message. Sometimes people read magazine or newspaper while they wait in a line at grocery stores, Barbershop, that’s not reading as he mentioned when you read to waste your time. You won’t get the idea, because a week later you may not be able to remember it as when you read with more critical thinking you need to look up words you don’t know, underline the sentence you think it’s interesting or using DR Fabiano method which is +,-,aha. He used the plus sign for interesting or important things. The subtraction sign for reviewing or look up the part.
The way people read newspapers and the way they read text books aren’t same. The way they read journal is not the way they study magazines. So reading varies in many ways. Whatever we read if we need to understand and memorize readings, we have to read actively. To read actively we follow some steps.
Dr. Fabiano said pay close attention to examples, because the best way to understand what you read is paying more attention to examples, they sentence clear also finding the conclusion.
Some steps he provided are:
+/-/aha
Look up unknown words
Take pauses
Don’t skim
Discuss about the topic with friends
This step really helps. Following this will make us bring good marks in examination and we will know and understand what we are reading. Reading actively is also important. For this we should follow some more steps:
Pay close attention to examples
Eliminate the excess delete
Figure out what is conclusion
Find out statements that provide important information
To understand a text perfectly needs lots of work. As Dr Fabiano mentioned lots of steps. Those steps are a guideline for active reading.

In "Rhetorical Reading Strategies and the Construction of Meaning" by Christina Haas and Linda Flower, the authors tells us in reading we should have strategies. The two main strategies they elaborate through out the passage are literary theory and cognitive research. Both take a huge part while reading to have a better understanding. As Haas and Flower say "'Critical reading' involves more than careful reading for content, more than identification of conventional features of discourse, such as introduction or examples, and more than simple evaluation based on agreeing or disagreeing"(170). That's why these strategies come in place, a good reader should be able to identify the topic sentence, supporting points, and conclusion. Students lack…

Reading has always been a tedious task for me; I could never focus on the material. Reading the material at least three times was a minimum to get anything out of it. I have found the key is to be remotely interested in the material. When I joined the military in 2001, I had to start reading all the Air Force Instructions (AFI) to learn how I was supposed to conduct myself on a daily basis. There are literally thousands upon thousands of AFIs published, and many, but not all, of them applied to me. I was able to…

In my own education, the reading activities that have had the most effect on my reading have varied. During my primary years, the strategies that we now call direct reading instruction helped build the foundational comprehension and vocabulary skills needed for reading more complex texts in college. While reading, I use context clues to try and understand any unknown vocabulary words. If this strategy does not work, I use my computer to look up synonyms for the word and re-read the sentence by replacing it with a word I understand. Additionally, I reread the entire paragraph with the synonym to derive the meaning of the concept or topic.…
