Importance of Critical Thinking in Today's Society
Critical thinking is important in today’s society because critical thinking skills give individuals the ability to not only understand what they have read or been shown, but also to build upon that knowledge without prior guidance. Critical thinking teaches students that knowledge is endless and constructs upon itself. Critical thinking is not merely conditioning memorization or the skill to catch onto lessons automatically. Critical thinking allows individuals the ability to think clearly and rationally and these skills are important for whatever one chooses to do in life. If one decides work in medicine, marketing, education or the legal profession, then critical thinking is clearly significant. Critical thinking skills are not limited to a specific subject area. Individuals who are able to think well and solve problems systematically have an asset that is valuable for any career, as well as survival in society, and making strides towards creating a critical society. Critical thinking is an important skill set to have in society because it allows others to see that one can comprehend a topic beyond its surface level. According to G. Randy Katsen, “The ability to think critically is one skill separating innovators from followers. Critical thinking reduces the power of advertisers, the unscrupulous and the pretentious, and can neutralize the sway of an unsupported argument.”1 Thinking critically is very important in the work place because critical thinking provides one with a method to use when dealing with information and that is very valuable and very much expected of a future employee. Critical thinking enables one to take on an abundance of information and this is critical when working in any profession. In today’s society one needs to be able to retain and respond to information given to them as efficiently as possible. Another reason critical thinking is important when in the workplace is because it allows employees to sum up information in a way that makes sense to them or help make sense of information to other employees. The final reason critical thinking is important in the work place is because it is important for employees to pick out the theories and arguments of various information, so that the can communicate their opinion or viewpoints in an effective and scholarly manner. The world is quickly evolving from day to day and the pace is speeding up with each day that passes. The stress to react increases. Global realities are hastily making changes in society’s life in every way possible such as, economically, socially, culturally, politically, and environmentally these realities call for philosophical implications for thinking and learning. These realities are becoming progressively difficult, and many represent major threats in society. They all turn on the powerful dynamic of accelerating change, ad critical thinking is the most active way to do so. Society cannot handle continuous and quickening change and complexity without transforming their way of thinking. By tradition society’s thinking has been intended for routine, for habit, for automation and fixed procedure.2 Society has learned how to do its job once, and has become accustomed to what was learned repeatedly.
The problems society is now faced with, and will continued to be faced with, will continue until they are required to drastically change the way they are to critically thinking. Critical thinking is more intricate, more adaptable, and more sensitive to opposing points of view. The world requires society to frequently relearn, regularly reconsider our decisions, often reassess the way they work and live. Nonetheless, the world is continuously changing in every aspect, and one is the control of society’s mind to command itself, and to frequently participate in self-analysis. Critical thinking will increasingly determine the quality of society’s work, the quality of one’s life, and possibly one’s existence in this world.
A critical society is a society of individuals who know the significance of critical thinking and value individuals who take use in it.3 A critical society is on that is constantly refining itself. A society that thinks critically has a distinguishing characteristic to underline thinking as the fundamental piece to the liberation of one’s mind. There has never been a more imperative time to adopt and develop critical societies. Earth’s resources are becoming scarce, wars, hunger and hopelessness of so many citizens and the many other vast issues we face as a society, it is imperative that we do something to make a change. The degree to how much change society can implement will be contingent on society’s capability to solve the complex problems faced. To fix the problems approaching society, there is one thing that can help in aiding to the problems, which is critical thinking. Critical societies can and will occur only to the level that human thinking becomes a major concern of society. To create a critical society, critical thinking needs to be understood as an intricate phenomenon that is regularly highlighted and discussed and evaluated in every relationship, in every family, in every business, in every organization, in every field and discipline, in every part of the culture.4 In short, the formation of critical societies depends on the individuals within the societies thinking seriously, studying society’s problems, its schemes, its flaws and assets, its natural inclinations, its capabilities.
In conclusion, society needs to know the level of power that critical thinking has on the world today. Critical thinking is a powerful weapon. The importance of critical thinking in society today is how it has the ability to implement positive change immensely. If more individuals continue to not utilize the skill society will face many consequences. Individuals in society need to use critical thinking to their advantage for a numerous amount of reasons such as, excelling in the workforce, survival in the world, and making positive strides to a better functioning society.
